Hiroko Kuniya ( Japanese 国 谷 裕子 , Kuniya Hiroko ; born February 3, 1957 in Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese news anchor and journalist.

Kuniya graduated from the International School of the Sacred Heart in 1975 and then Brown University with a major in international relations and international economics. In 1981 she began working as a newscaster and writer for the English-language evening news programs of the public broadcaster NHK . From 1986 she worked as a research assistant in the USA for NHK Special . She later worked on news programs such as Asia Now (1990), which were broadcast in the United States on the Public Broadcasting Service .

Since its launch in 1993, Kuniya has hosted Close-up Gendai news magazine , which broadcasts NHK four days a week on its terrestrial and satellite channels, as well as prime-time NHK World and NHK World Premium. It had its last broadcast on March 17, 2016, and it is believed that the NHK was persuaded to take this step by the Shinzo Abe government .
