Hirschthal ( Swiss German : Herschtu, ˈhɪrʃtʊ ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Aarau district and is located in the lower Suhrental , around eight kilometers south of the canton's capital Aarau .

geography

The village is located east of the Suhre at the exit of a two-kilometer-long side valley that runs towards the east and is simply called the "valley". The narrow side valley is bordered by two steep hills, the Egg ( 592  m above sea level ) in the north and the Gschneit ( 598  m above sea level ) in the south. At the eastern end of the valley there is also a steep range of hills, the Hochwacht ( 653  m above sea level ). This also forms the transition to the Wynental . To the west of the village, the Suhrental widens into an extensive plain.

The area of the municipality is 353 hectares , of which 181 hectares are forested and 61 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 653 meters on the Hochwacht, the lowest at 437 meters on the Suhre. Neighboring communities are Muhen in the north, Unterkulm in the east, Schöftland in the south and Holziken in the west. The settlement area has almost merged with that of Schöftland.

history

Various brick fragments and the foundation of a building, which were uncovered in 1958, suggest a settlement during Roman times . Hyrztale was first mentioned in a document in 893 in a document from the Fraumünster in Zurich . The place name comes from the Old High German (ze) hirztale and means "in the Hirschtal". In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , from 1173 on that of the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs became the new rulers in 1273.

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Hirschthal now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Bernese Aargau . The lower jurisdiction was owned by the Lords of Rupperswil , a Habsburg ministerial family , until 1380 . It then passed to Hallwyler , who in turn sold it to Bern in 1604. Thus Hirschthal was part of the judicial district of Oberentfelden in the Lenzburg office . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation .

In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Hirschthal initially belonged to the Kulm district, from 1803 (expansion of Aargau to include the cantons of Baden and Fricktal ) to the Aarau district. The Suhrentalbahn started operating on November 19, 1901. The community was dominated by agriculture until well into the 20th century, but home work for the textile industry was also widespread. From the mid-1970s onwards, Hirschthal became a residential community in the Aarau agglomeration.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "Red deer jumping in white on green ground." The earliest version of this coat of arms appeared on a glass pane in Schöftland's church as early as 1683 . In 1948 the design was revised.
