1 1 The suspicion pilot Oct 2, 2011 Feb 3, 2013 Michael Cuesta Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa , Gideon Raff
Carrie Mathison receives information from a terrorist captured in Iraq, from which she concludes that a captured American soldier is cooperating with terrorists. Some time later, Nicholas Brody, a sergeant in the US Marines , who had been missing for eight years, was rescued by a Delta Force command. Mathison is suspicious and believes Brody is working with the terrorists. Brody himself is received enthusiastically. His wife Jessica, who had a relationship with Nicholas' best friend, is initially shocked at the news that her husband is still alive. But she tries to have a normal family life with her husband and her two children again. Mathison, who has bipolar disorder and therefore takes clozapine , cannot convince her superiors of her suspicions. She therefore illegally installs cameras in Brody's house and also has him monitored, but there is no evidence to support her suspicion, although flashbacks make it clear that Brody lied several times about the time of his imprisonment. At the end of the first episode, she notices that Brody appears to be giving signals with his right hand during camera appearances and suspects that this is how he was trying to make contact with his cell.

Brody is only slowly getting used to his American life. Initially, he refused any interview to the reporters who were besieging his house. He also wants nothing more to do with the military, which wants to use him for propaganda purposes, and the war. Again and again he was overwhelmed by panic attacks and memories of his imprisonment, in which he was apparently tortured, but also beat his fellow prisoners himself. Mathison continues her surveillance, backed up by her old friend and mentor Saul Berenson, whom she initially lied to about the matter. She also learns from Lynne Reed, a CIA source, that terrorist leader Abu Nazir was seen in Cyprus a few days ago. At the end of the episode, Brody, who has apparently converted to Islam, is seen praying in secret before he faces the reporters.

The CIA, through Mathison's contact with Lynne Reed, is monitoring an Arab prince who has ties to Abu Nazir. But shortly afterwards Lynne is murdered. Mathison finally discovered that an extremely valuable necklace that Lynne had received as a gift from the prince and that disappeared after she was murdered was probably used to finance a terrorist. Meanwhile, Brody builds a good relationship with his daughter Dana, who is estranged from Jessica and knows about her affair with Brody's boyfriend Mike Faber. In an interview, Brody reveals that the terrorists tried to convince him during the interrogation and torture that everyone had given up on him and that he was all alone. He still seems to be suffering from the consequences of this, and it is also not yet possible for him to maintain an impartial, intimate relationship with his wife.

When Brody expresses a desire to speak to the terrorist directly, Mathison refuses. Brody persuades David Estes to talk to the man, and a fight ensues between him and Brody. The terrorist is later found dead. Mathison suspects that Brody is implicated in both this and the escape of the Sleeper from Abu Nazir.

During a party that follows, Brody and Mike Faber quarrel. Mathison enforces that several people, including Brody, must undergo a polygraph test. The night before they both meet in a bar and then spend the night together. The next day, Brody passed the test, and when asked if he had ever cheated on his wife, he calmly replied "No". After the CIA knows that Tom Walker is alive and working for the terrorists, they hunt him down. With the help of his wife, Walker is set up, but he escapes at the last moment. Mathison blames herself for apparently wrongly accusing Brody and tries to apologize to him, but Brody does not accept this and tries to clarify his relationship with Jessica. Politicians also want to build Brody as a candidate for the House of Representatives ( reference is made here to the Anthony Weiner affair ). After learning from Carrie that Tom Walker is alive, he visits the home of a Saudi diplomat who was also in contact with Walker and who appears to be in contact with Abu Nazir.

Walker is still on the run. The failed attempt to arrest him leads to a firefight in a mosque; Serious allegations are then made in public against the investigating authorities. Brody, who wanted to sever ties with Abu Nazir, is ambushed by terrorists and beaten up. He is injected with a drug so that he can relive his time in captivity. In these scenes it now becomes clear how he was recruited, with the terrorists using his feelings among other things, but he took the last step out of conviction. He seems reluctant to decide to go back to work for the terrorists and returns to Jessica.

Mathison recovers from her injuries, although she clearly shows psychological stress, which Berenson also recognizes. This nevertheless helps her to check her theory of the structure of the terror network. Brody is spending a weekend in Gettysburg with his family; the family seems to be reasonably intact for the first time in a long time. After seeing the site of the Battle of Gettysburg together, the family goes to dinner . An Arabic-speaking man gives Brody an explosive vest and an explanation of how to use it. In the diner he is recognized by the guests present and a man promises Brody to vote for him in the upcoming election. Meanwhile, Berenson manages to sort confidential documents about Abu Nazir that are piled up chaotically in Mathison's apartment, whereupon Mathison develops a theory the next day. Under the influence of medication and in the euphoria of further progress, she calls Brody, whom she believes to be her ally. With his presence of mind, Brody realizes the situation and informs Director Estes about the illegal surveillance operation and the affair. Thereupon Estes releases Mathison from duty.

Meanwhile, Carrie Mathison, who witnesses the shooting and realizes the connections between the shooting, drives to Brody's house and tries to convince Dana to stop her father from setting the vest off. On his return he is about to set the fire again when Dana calls him and begs him to come home, which he promises her.

In the meantime, Saul Berenson comes up with details behind the drone operation in which Abu Nazir's son Issa lost his life. He can prove that u. a. Estes was directly involved in the kill order and threatens to publish this sensitive information. In the evening there is a first meeting between Brody and Walker since their capture. Abu Nazir, who overheard the phone, agrees and has Walker shot by Brody.
