history

The hotel stands a little higher on Taganana Hill in the Vedado district. The Batería de Santa Clara gun complex stood there during the Spanish colonial rule of the island . It served to repel attacks on the bay.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba opened in December 1930. The building was designed by the US architects McKim, Mead, and White . The hotel quickly became known for its exposed location and the view of the Malecón and Havana Bay. Even at the opening, the Nacional met with great approval - both from the Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado and from America's “ high society ”. In Nacional lodged celebrities like Buster Keaton , Johnny Weissmuller , Tyrone Power , Errol Flynn , Marlene Dietrich , Yuri Gagarin , Rocky Marciano and Ernest Hemingway .

In December 1946, the American Cosa Nostra held a congress in the Nacional which became known as the " Havana Conference ". In the 1950s, Meyer Lansky set up one of America's most successful casinos in the hotel with the approval and support of President Fulgencio Batista . As a result of the Cuban Revolution , the casino was closed in the 1960s.

The building of the Nacional was declared a cultural monument of Cuba in 1988. In 1992 the hotel was completely renovated and is currently in operation.
