Hubert Auriol (born June 7, 1952 in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia ; †  January 10, 2021 in Garches ) was a French motocross and enduro racing driver , rally driver and later director of the Dakar Rally and the Africa Eco Race . He was not related to the 1994 world rally champion , his compatriot Didier Auriol .

Auriol won the Dakar Rally on BMW GS motorcycles in 1981 and 1983 ; In 1984 he finished second behind Gaston Rahier . In 1992 he won the Dakar Rally in the automobile classification with a Mitsubishi - Pajero-Evolution - SUV . From 1995 to 2003 he was director of the Dakar Rally. From 2006 he headed the Heroes Legend desert rally , which - like the original Dakar Rally - also runs from Paris to Dakar . In 2011 he and Jean-Paul Forthomme took part in the Africa Eco Race on a Predator X-18 buggy.

He died on Sunday, January 10, 2021 after a cardiovascular collapse.
