Hugh Edwin Munroe (born May 31, 1878 in Glengarry County , Ontario , † March 12, 1947 in Florida ) was a Canadian politician . From 1931 to 1936 he was lieutenant governor of Saskatchewan Province .

biography

Munroe studied medicine at McGill University in Montreal . He did postgraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh . He later moved to Saskatchewan and settled in the city of Saskatoon , where he opened a medical practice. In 1905 he took part as a candidate for the Conservative Provincial Rights Party in the first elections to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly , but was not elected. He was equally unsuccessful on his second attempt in 1912, this time for the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan .

During the First World War Munroe served as a lieutenant colonel in the Medical Corps on the Western Front and was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services . After the war, he resumed his medical practice in Saskatoon. Governor General Lord Bessborough sworn in Munroe on March 31, 1931 as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. The appointment met with criticism in some political circles given the far-reaching effects of the global economic crisis . In the Legislative Assembly in 1934 a bill was tabled to abolish the office of lieutenant governor, but was clearly rejected. Munroe remained in office until September 9, 1936.
