Hugh Moffatt (born November 10, 1948 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is an American country singer and songwriter.

Beginnings

Hugh Moffatt learned to play the piano and trumpet as a teenager and was a member of a high school band. After an initial fondness for country music, he dealt mainly with jazz and blues while studying English at Houston Rice University. After graduating, he got stuck in Nashville on his way to Washington in 1973 , where he attended a performance of the Grand Ole Opry during a stopover and during these hours he regained his old passion for country music.

Career

Moffatt initially worked as a songwriter. His role models were Kris Kristofferson and Ed Penny. In 1974 his Just In Case , interpreted by Ronnie Milsap , reached number five on the country charts. A long dry spell followed. A first attempt as a singer had failed after two unsuccessful singles. He married the songwriter Pebe Sebert. Together, the couple wrote Old Flames Can't Hold A Candle , which was made a mean hit by Joe Sun in 1978 . In 1980 Dolly Parton made number one with this song. Other country singers, such as Johnny Rodriguez or Bobby Bare, were also successful with his songs.

At the beginning of 1980, Hugh Moffatt formed the Ratz group together with his wife, as well as Wade McCurdy, John Dietrich and Michael Bonagura . With his own money he financed the first album Puttin 'On The Ratz in 1984 . Two years later he recorded a solo album, Loving You , for which he only used his own material. In 1989, Troubador followed , which is now considered his best work. Together with his sister, country singer Katy Moffatt , he produced Dance Me Outside in 1992 .

Long-haired, unusually gaunt and frail-looking for a country musician, Hugh Moffatt did not find it easy to gain a foothold in the scene. The gentle lyrics of his songs, however, had a quality that was able to convince critics and audiences alike.
