Hugues Lapointe

Hugues Lapointe , PC , OC , QC (born March 3, 1911 in Rivière-du-Loup , Québec , † November 13, 1982 in Sainte-Foy ) was a Canadian politician . He was a Liberal MP in the Canadian House of Commons from 1940 to 1957 , during which time he held several ministerial posts. From 1966 to 1978 he served as Vice-Governor of the Province of Québec.

biography

The son of Justice Minister Ernest Lapointe studied law at the Universities of Ottawa and Laval . In 1935 he was admitted as a lawyer . During the Second World War he served voluntarily in the Canadian Army, where he was stationed in Europe in 1941 and 1943/44 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

Lapointe ran as a candidate for the Liberal Party in the 1940 general election and was successful in the Lotbinière constituency. In 1945, 1949 and 1953 he was re-elected. In the federal cabinet of Louis Saint-Laurent , he was first deputy minister of justice from August 1949 to August 1950, then Minister for Veterans Affairs. At the same time he served as Minister of Post from November 1955.

Since he lost his mandate in the general election in 1957 , Lapointe had to resign in June 1957 and resumed his profession. From 1961 he represented the interests of the province of Québec in the British capital London as General Delegate . Governor General Georges Vanier swore in him on February 22, 1966 as Lieutenant Governor of Québec. He held this representative office until April 27, 1978.
