The company mines and sells petroleum and natural gas products to its customers. The company operates primarily in the United States, Canada and China. The company was founded in 1938 under the name Husky Refining Company . The company produced around 282,000 barrels of oil per day in 2012 and is one of Canada's largest oil companies. The company is listed in the S & P / TSX 60 share index.

history

The company was founded in Cody , Wyoming, USA in 1938 as the Husky Refining Company by Glenn Nielsen. The first oil refinery was built in Cody and a second in Riverton, Wyoming. In 1946 the Riverton Refinery was relocated to Lloydminster , Alberta, Canada to manufacture asphalt and heavy fuel oil . Production began in 1947. In 1949 the company issued its first shares in Canada and in 1952 in the USA. A year later, the Canadian parts of the group were converted into an Incorporated , the shares of Husky Oil and Refining Ltd. were traded in Canada and the United States. The company bought a refinery in Moose Jaw in 1954 and moved to Ontario . In 1960 the outstanding shares of the American company were bought. During the construction of the new corporate headquarters in Downtown Calgary and for the 100th anniversary of Canada in 1967, the Husyky Tower was built, a 190 meter high television tower that was later sold and renamed the Calgary Tower . In 1967 the Frontier Refining Company was also bought, with two refineries increasing the company's processing capacity to 45,000 barrels a day. After the purchase, it owned 1,223 gas stations in the United States and 408 in Canada. In 1973 the exploration of the Athabasca oil sands began . The Union Oil Company with a refinery and 110 gas stations was taken over in 1976.

NOVA Chemicals bought Husky in 1978, and one year later the company's sales topped one billion US dollars for the first time. In 1981 offshore explorations began in the Beaufort Sea and off the east coast of Canada. A new refinery with a processing capacity of 25,000  barrels per day was inaugurated in Lloydminster in 1983, followed in 1984 by the sale of the US-American parts of the group including the local filling station network. In 1987, the company was privately owned by Hong Kong investor Li Ka-shing. In 1989 Canterra Energy was bought. In the early 1990s, Husky Energy formed a joint venture with the Canadian and provincial governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan to explore additional tar sands. In 1996 a joint venture was set up with the China National Petroleum Corporation to search for oil in the People's Republic of China. Further takeovers and start-ups followed at the end of the 1990s, and in 1998 the filling station network was taken over by Mohawk Oil. Mohawk remained as a brand within the company. In 2000 it went to the Toronto Stock Exchange. In the 2000s, the focus on offshore production began to increase, and several Floating Production Storage and Offloading Units (FPSO) were purchased and used off the coasts of Canada and China.

activities

The company owns production areas in which bitumen, oil and gas is produced. This is further processed in the company's own refineries and later sold, partly through the Group's network of petrol stations .

Support areas

The main production areas of Husky Energy are in western Canada, where extensive production takes place. When buying in British Columbia and Alberta, the existing infrastructure can be used to generate greater profit.

Oil sands deposits

The Athabasca oil sands deposits have been explored by Husky Energy since 1973, who are among the largest owners of the deposits. The company controls oil sands containing over 50 billion barrels of oil. The Tucker deposit is being mined and Sunrise, Saleski and McMullen are being prepared for production. Production began in Tucker in 2006, where bitumen is extracted from the Clearwater Formation. The Sunrise deposit is located approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Fort McMurray and contains reserves of 3.7 billion barrels of bitumen. The open pit mine will initially produce 60,000 barrels of bitumen per day, later up to 200,000 barrels per day. The first oil is to be produced in 2014, the service life of the open pit is estimated at 40 years. The Saleski deposit is 130 kilometers west of Fort McMurray, where bitumen lies in the Grosmont, Ireton and Nisku formations. Commercial mining is slated to begin in the late 2010s. The McMullen area has measured reserves of 640 million barrels of bitumen and is being explored through drilling and a 3D model is being made.

Offshore in the Northwest Atlantic

Off the east coast of Canada, Husky Energy has several offshore reservoirs that are being explored, mainly in the Joan of Arc Basin off Newfoundland and the Labrador Peninsula . The White Rose oil field is located in the east of the Joan of Arc Basin, about 350 kilometers east of St. John's . The SeaRose FPSO is used to transport and store the oil . The underwater systems are positioned in pits to protect them from icebergs; if the iceberg scrapes the seabed, the systems are not carried away. Six kilometers southwest of the SeaRose FPSO's position is the North Amethyst field. It was discovered in 2006 and commercial oil production began in May 2010. West White Rose is located near White Rose and is intended to be explored to determine the size of the deposit. Husky Energy has a 13 percent stake in the Terra Nova field, located around 35 kilometers southwest of White Rose at a depth of 91 to 100 meters. Further explorations are being carried out in the Sydney Basin between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia , and several areas are also being investigated on the west coast of Greenland's Disko Island .

Offshore in the West Pacific

Husky Energy owns several offshore areas in the South China Sea and off the east coast of Java . The Wenchang oil field is located in front of the mouth of the Pearl River , around 400 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong. Commercial production began in 2002, and the oil is piped from 30 boreholes at a depth of around 100 meters to an FPSO stationed between them. The Liwan Gas Project, which consists of several gas fields, is located around 300 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong. The first discovered Liwan-3-1 field lies in deep water and uses underwater production facilities, the gas is from there pipelines to a platform in shallow water and on to a gas power plant. Commercial funding is scheduled to begin in late 2013 or early 2014. The two fields Liuhua 34-2 and Liuhua 29-1 are located near Liwan 3-1 and are intended to use the same infrastructure. Both are said to go into operation simultaneously with Liwan 3-1. Husky Energy has been active in Indonesia since 1989. The Madura Strait production area is off the east coast of Java and contains several natural gas fields . Commercial production in one of the fields is scheduled to begin in 2014, the other is still being explored. Another natural gas field is being investigated around 300 kilometers east of the Madura Strait production area, off the island of Sumbawa .

transport

Husky Energy has a 2,000-kilometer pipeline system for crude oil, the lines run from Saskatchewan and Alberta to the Lloydminster refinery. From there, further pipelines lead to Hardisty, where there is a connection to further pipelines to eastern Canada and the USA.

Processing plants

The Lloydminster refinery processes crude oil into low-sulfur synthetic oil . In addition to the end product diesel, sulfur and petroleum coke are produced as by-products , which are sold to the chemical industry and as fuel for boilers and cement kilns. There is also a refinery that produces asphalt in Lloydminster. The Prince George refinery was built in 1967 and has been part of Husky Energy since 1976. The crude oil is processed here into unleaded gasoline, diesel, propane and butane , which is later distributed through the Group's own gas station network and sold to other gas station operators. In the United States, the company has two refineries in Lima and Toledo . The Lima refinery produces lighter fuels such as gasoline and kerosene , with annual emissions of two billion gallons . Toledo produces lighter fuels and gases. In western Canada, Husky Energy also owns two ethanol producing plants in Lloydminster and Minnedosa . Together they produce around 260 million liters of ethanol per year from a good 700,000 tons of grain that cannot be used as food. The ethanol is later mixed with gasoline and sold through gas stations.

sale

Husky Energy owns around 500 filling stations in western and central Canada that operate under the Husky and Mohawk brands. In recent years, petrol stations have been bought from other providers and operated under their own name.
