history

Hutchison Whampoa emerged in 1977 from two companies founded in the 19th century: Hongkong and Whampoa Dock (founded in 1863) and Hutchison International (1877). Hutchison International acquired a majority stake in Hong Kong Whampoa Dock under Douglas Clague in the 1960s. In 1977, Hutchison acquired all of Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock and became Hutchison Whampoa Limited . In 1979 Li Ka-shing bought 22% of the shares in HWL and became company chairman.

  • telecommunications

The business activities were present worldwide with the exception of China . Chinese holdings from the five strategic business areas were mostly owned by Cheung Kong Holdings , despite the possible loss of synergy effects . The largest market for HWL was Asia and Oceania, where it generates 46% of its revenues (of which 20% Hong Kong and 8% China and the remaining 18% in the rest of Asia and Australia). Close behind was Europe, where HWL generates 41% of its sales. (As of 2005)

Telecommunications in Germany and the Mannesmann trial

In 1992, HWL took a stake in a company founded by René Obermann and Andreas Wilhelm Gerdes in Germany, which later became known as Hutchison Telecom . After Obermann left in 1998, Hutchison Telecom GmbH was sold to Orange, which at the time was still majority owned by HWL.

In the hostile takeover of Mannesmann by Vodafone in 2000, HWL, as the largest single shareholder in the Mannesmann Group, played a role that was heavily dealt with in the German media as part of the Mannesmann trial .

In 2000, Hutchison Whampoa and the German mobile network operator E-Plus participated in the auction of UMTS licenses in Germany . Shortly after the successful auction, the company parted with the stake again.

From 2000 to 2001, HWL was the largest non-state shareholder in Deutsche Telekom . HWL received the 170 million shares as part of a share swap on the occasion of the takeover of Powertel and Voicestream by Deutsche Telekom. In August 2001, HWL sold 44 million of its shares valued at around EUR 1 billion in Deutsche Telekom AG , causing the share price to slide.
