I Dreamed a Dream is Susan Boyle's first studio album released on November 23, 2009 and is also the name of the associated single . It was certified seven times platinum in the UK and four times multi-platinum in the US , and sold around eight million copies in the first two months of its release.

Emergence

Already during the current 2009er edition of the British talent show Britain's Got Talent it was Simon Cowell offered a recording contract, regardless of whether they win or not. After finishing second, she signed a deal with Cowell's label Syco . Initially, it was planned to record a selection of Broadway hits with an orchestra in the Czech Republic . The reason for this was that her final contribution I Dreamed a Dream was a recording of the title of the same name from the musical Les Misérables . In July 2009 Boyle recorded the first demos in a studio in Edinburgh , from which producer Steve Mac was so enthusiastic that instead of the planned musical recordings, an album with cover versions should be created. The actual recordings for I Dreamed a Dream took place in London in August and September . Susan Boyle chose the twelve cover versions herself, with a focus on ballads . In the handwritten liner notes for the album, she explains what the respective title means for her personally.

success

The album is the best-selling album of 2009 worldwide and sold around 6.2 million times in the first four weeks of its release alone. With an average of 1.55 million albums sold per week, it set the sales record previously held by Michael Jackson for his album Thriller . Never before has an album been pre-ordered from the online mail order company Amazon.com as often as I Dreamed a Dream . It reached the top ten of the album charts in numerous countries around the world and was number 1 in the charts in countries such as Great Britain, the USA, Canada , Australia , Greece , Ireland , Switzerland and the Netherlands .

Reviews

The reviews were mixed. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic describes the album as "sleepy, reserved and cozy". The album will satisfy those listeners who are taken with Boyle's voice or her story, but not those who expect more. Katja Scherle from laut.de blames Susan Boyle's personality in particular for ensuring that it is a good album and sums it up that it is "hideously sappy and touchingly beautiful". BBC Music's Adrian Edwards writes that with this album Boyle succeeded in transforming her talent show star into a first-class recording artist who is worthy of the prestigious record label.
