Charles Igor Gorin , Ukrainian Ігор Горін , Russian Игорь Горин , actually Izak Gruenberg (born April 26, 1904 in Gródek ; † March 24, 1982 in Tucson ) was a Ukrainian-American singer (baritone), actor, composer and vocal teacher.

Life

Born as Izak Gruenberg in Gródek, Galicia , the son of a rabbi and Talmud scholar grew up in the Ukraine. At the end of the 1920s he fled to Vienna and studied at the Vienna Conservatory with Victor Fuchs . He made his debut as a singer at the Prague State Opera . In 1931 he emigrated to the USA and sang operettas and light classical music on NBC radio . In 1939 he made his debut at the Hollywood Bowl ; in the same year he received American citizenship. In a production of Hoffmann's stories in 1948 he sang the roles of Lindorf, Coppélius, Dapertutto and Dr. Miracle. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1964 as Giorgio Germont in La traviata . He also worked as a cantor at a synagogue in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1965 he moved to Tucson with his wife, actress Mary Gorin . There he taught singing at the University of Arizona until his death . As a composer he became known with songs like Lament , Caucasian Song , Safe by de Lawd , Lullaby and Within My Dreams .
