occupation

Her name was Maria (original title: Maria di Nazaret ) is a two-part German-Italian co-production from 2012. The focus is on the life story of Maria von Nazaret , the mother of Jesus. The German-language title can also refer to Maria Magdalena , who also plays a major role in a subplot.

action

Out of gratitude that God saved their daughter Maria from the soldiers of King Herod, Anna and Joachim send Maria to the temple in Jerusalem. Here she is brought up by the wise Simeon. Years later, she returns to Nazareth as a young woman. Here she becomes engaged to the carpenter Josef.

At that time the mother of Mary Magdalene, a friend of Mary, was stoned to death for adultery. Since Magdalena has had enough of Nazareth's village life, she joins a caravan in which one of her relatives, Herodias, is on the way to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, Magdalena falls in love with Antipater, a son of King Herod the Great. Without Magdalena's knowledge, Herodias lays a trap for Antipater and blames him for a planned poison attack on his father. The consequence of this is that Herod has his son Antipater killed.

In Nazareth, Mary the angel Gabriel appears and announces to the young woman that she should give life to the Son of God. At first Joseph wants to cast his fiancée out for adultery, but after a dream in which God encouraged him to do so, he marries Mary. A few months later the Roman emperor called for a census. Joseph and Mary travel to Bethlehem, where Jesus is born in a stable. But Herod the Great, who fears losing power after the unsuccessful poison attack on his person, has all small male children in the city of Jesus' birth killed in Bethlehem after learning from wise men from the East of the arrival of the Messiah. Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt with Jesus. They only return to Nazareth after Herod's death, when Jesus was already 7 years old.

Apparently Mary and Joseph have no other children. The carpenter Josef dies after an accident at work.

Thirty years later, Jesus begins his work. He travels through Israel, preaching, performing miracles and gathering followers. Maria follows the development of her son.

Magdalena is now married to Joazar, one of the captains of the new King Herod Antipas. She learns about Jesus and knows that he is a special man, maybe even the Messiah himself. But even John the Baptist, who baptized people at the Jordan and railed against Herod and his second wife Herodias, is loved by the people. Herodias goes back to Magdalena. She gives her money so that Mary can bribe people to spread false statements about John. In return, Herodias promises her that John will not be killed. But it turns out differently: Johannes is arrested. At a dinner for Herod's birthday, Salome, Herodias' daughter, dances so gracefully that Herod promises her the fulfillment of a wish. She wants Johannes' head. Magdalena then leaves the king's fortress, weeping, knowing that she was tricked and was complicit in his death. In a nearby town she starts working as a prostitute. When Joazar, her husband, meets her in the brothel after days of searching, he gives the order that she should be stoned, like her mother once was. But just at this moment Jesus appears. He saves Mary Magdalene's life by asking the one to throw the first stone who is without sin.

Mary Magdalene then accompanies Jesus and his disciples. She also meets her friend, Mary, Jesus' mother, again. With Jesus they set off for Jerusalem. One night here they learn from Jesus' disciple John that Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane. The two women and John then accompany Jesus until he is crucified. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead.

background

Her name was Maria is one of the most successful Bible films in recent years. Part 1 persecuted 7.1 million people in Italy at Easter 2012, part 2 as much as 8.4 million. This corresponds to a market share of around 29 percent.

The film was shot in Tunisia . Bible film connoisseurs will notice that in the same location where Jesus is sentenced to death by Pilate in the film, Jesus was already standing in front of Pilate in The Messiah in 1975 . Some locations have also been shown in other Bible films such as 1987 A Child Named Jesus .

In no other Bible film before is the age difference between the actors of Jesus and Mary as great as in this film. Andreas Pietschmann (Jesus) is 12 years older than Alissa Jung (Maria) - she remains the same age, it seems, throughout the film. Luca Marinelli, who embodies Joseph, Jesus' foster father in the film, is even 15 years younger than Pietschmann.
