In Through the Out Door is the eighth studio album by the British rock band Led Zeppelin . It was recorded and produced in Stockholm in November and December 1978 and released on August 15, 1979 on Swan Song Records . The album reached number one on the US charts.

The title of the album stands for the problems that Led Zeppelin had with getting their works to the public again in the midst of the rising punk . It was like “getting in through the out door”. The work on the album was mainly done by John Paul Jones , as Jimmy Page and John Bonham were in a personal crisis and Robert Plant could not take on any instrument parts. If John Paul Jones felt unable to come up with his own ideas when recording Presence , he was able to bring more input here, inspired by a new Roland synthesizer.

There are six different outer and inner cover (sleeve) variants for this album, which are sold in a wrapping paper-colored envelope so that you do not know which of the six versions you are buying. They show a bar as it appears from the respective perspective of a person present. With some (sleeve) variants, the sleeve could be colored by moistening it with water. Hipgnosis was nominated for a Grammy in 1979 for the design of the cover in the Best Album Package category.

The only single from In Through the Out Door was Fool in the Rain , with Hot Dog as the b-side. Robert Plant dedicated the song All My Love to his son Karac, who died of an aggressive virus infection in 1977 at the age of five.
