Ingo Bernard Runnebaum (born September 21, 1960 in Cologne ) is a German doctor, gynecologist , cancer researcher, reproductive medicine and university professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and clinical director of the university women's clinic in Jena with a focus on gynecological oncology , gynecological surgery and gynecological molecular biology.

Life

Runnebaum grew up in Heidelberg , attended the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium there from 1971–1980 and studied philosophy and chemistry from 1980 to 1982 in Heidelberg and from 1982 to 1988 medicine in Mainz, Berlin and Munich. From 1989 to 1992 he was a postdoc at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego , where he and Saraswati Sukumar researched the p53 gene in breast cancer in a research group led by Nobel Prize winner Renato Dulbecco . He received his doctorate in 1990 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Dermatology and Allergology under the chair of Otto Braun-Falco . In 1997, he was recognized as a specialist by the Baden-Württemberg Medical Association and completed his habilitation at the University of Ulm under his teacher Rolf Kreienberg ; the latter with a license to teach gynecology and obstetrics and thus in the footsteps of his father Benno Runnebaum , who is also a researcher and specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. Runnebaum worked at the University Women's Clinic in Ulm until 1999 and followed the call to a professorship at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he was the senior physician until he moved to the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich as the deputy clinic director specializing in gynecological surgery worked under the chair holder Klaus Friese . He also obtained a Master of Business Administration from the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences in 2005 . In the same year he was appointed to the Friedrich Schiller University Jena as a university professor (W3) and director of the university women's clinic, where he is still active today. In addition to his clinical and surgical work, Runnebaum is known for around 200 scientific contributions, over 500 specialist lectures in Germany and internationally, his university teaching and further training for doctors ( ESGO congresses, etc.), as well as television appearances on Sat 1, RTL, MDR Erfurt and Leipzig .

specialization

Runnebaum is an expert in breast cancer and gynecological tumors . He specialized in breast-conserving Oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery as well as minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) to remove sentinel lymph nodes and pelvic tumors ( laparoscopy for uterine fibroids , tiefinfiltrierender endometriosis , radical nerve-sparing hysterectomy , Lymphonodektomien and complex genital cancer operations with multi-visceral surgery). After gynecology , gynecological oncology and endocrinology , the following areas of specialization were recognized by the State Medical Association: reproductive medicine , perinatal medicine and “special obstetrics”. The focus of his research and funded projects lies in the area of ovarian , cervical and breast cancer .

Scientific contribution

Runnebaum showed the role of the p53 gene (TP53) as a tumor suppressor gene in the development of breast and ovarian carcinoma. He was the first researcher in Germany to test adenoviral gene therapy in the abdomen in clinical studies in patients with ovarian cancer . He led the first randomized HIPEC study with heated chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity for ovarian cancer in Germany. After participating in the founding of the University Tumor Center Jena (2008), Runnebaum founded the Endometriosis Center in Jena in 2009, the University Pelvic Floor Center and the Thuringian Pelvic Floor Network in 2009 and the Gynecological Cancer Center Jena and the Thuringian interdisciplinary Moym Center in 2010.

Awards

Runnebaum received the Walter Hohlweg Prize in 1994 for his research on the p53 gene as a tumor suppressor and cell cycle regulator in breast cancer cells . Since 2007 he has been one of the best gynecologists in the FOCUS list and the good advice list.
