Innocent IX. (* July 20, 1519 in Bologna ; † December 30, 1591 in Rome ), real name Giovanni Antonio Facchinetti , was Pope of the Catholic Church from October 29, 1591 to December 30, 1591 .

Life

Giovanni Antonio Facchinetti studied law in his native city of Bologna. He finished his studies in 1544 with the Dr. jur. and became secretary of Alessandro Cardinal Farnese , later Pope Paul III.

Pope Pius IV appointed him Bishop of Nicastro in 1560 . In this capacity he took part in the Council of Trent . Pope Pius V appointed him papal nuncio in Venice in 1566 .

When he resigned his office as Bishop of Nicastro for health reasons in 1575, Pope Gregory XIII appointed him . as titular patriarch of Jerusalem and on December 12, 1583 as cardinal of the titular church Santi Quattro Coronati .

For his predecessor Pope Gregory XIV, who was also suffering from health problems , he partially led the state business in Rome.

On October 29, 1591, the conclave elected him as the new Pope after only two days of deliberation. He began his pontificate as a sick man and died two months later.

During these two months, however, he reformed the papal secretariat of state . He divided it into three main departments: a department for Germany , one for France and Poland, and a third department for Italy and Spain .

Innocent IX. was viewed by his contemporaries as a strict and ascetic Pope, which is why the Pope's name should be interpreted programmatically ( innocentia = innocence).

Cardinal creations

Pope Innocent IX created on December 18, 1591 with Filippo Sega and Giovanni Antonio Facchinetti de Nuce the only cardinals of his pontificate.
