International Gaddafi Prize for Human Rights

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Gaddafi Prize for Human Rights was an annual award from 1989 to 2010, donated by and named after the Libyan ruler at the time, Muammar al-Gaddafi . The prize was awarded according to the Organization, among others, those to the peaceful struggle for the freedom of people and observance of human rights were committed and against racial discrimination were fighting.

In the first few years, the award was managed on a mandate basis by the Swiss non-governmental organization (NGO) Nord-Süd XXI . Their task was, among other things, to suggest award winners. The aforementioned NGO was supported by the Swiss foundation Institut Nord-Sud pour le dialogue interculturel , of which Jean Ziegler acted as vice-president from 2002 to 2009. He described the Gaddafi human rights award as the "Anti-Nobel Prize of the Third World". At that time media reports, such as the UPI news agency or Time Magazine , that he was a member of the jury, he now rejects as "objectively wrong". He also rejected the award he was awarded in 2002. The NZZ According to Ziegler to have been in 1989 called as a member not only of the prize committee, but also of the seven-member Executive Bureau of the Preisauslober and still performed in September 2010 as a member of the Executive Bureau, however.
