history

The first soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic were interned in the Polish Łańcut in 1919 after the collapse of the Ukrainian front in the Ukrainian-Soviet war . After the final Ukrainian defeat in 1920, combined with the withdrawal of the approximately 20,000-strong army on Polish territory and the signing of the Peace of Riga , Poland interned the soldiers in camps in Aleksandrów Kujawski , Cracow , Kalisz , Czestochowa , Piotrków Trybunalski , Wadowice , Łańcut and the village of Pikulice . In 1921 the soldiers were transferred from the Łańcut camp to Strzałkowo and from Aleksandrów Kujawski to Szczypiorno . Over time, many Ukrainians emigrated to Czechoslovakia and France . In 1923 the camps were dissolved and the remaining Ukrainians were given the status of political refugees .
