The Irrel waterfalls in the lower reaches of the Prüm

The Irrel waterfalls are the rapids in the lower reaches of the Prüm between Prümzurlay and Irrel in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Emergence

Between Prümzurlay and Irrel, the Prüm has dug itself deep into the Ferschweiler plateau formed by the morphologically hard Luxembourg sandstone . The upper slopes of the resulting canyon-like Kerbtal are formed by this very rugged sandstone. The lower slopes are formed by the clays, marls and gypsum of the Keuper . During the last glacial period , the slope became unstable and a rock fall occurred . The sliding and falling masses of large chunks of Luxembourg sandstone and easily deformable Keuper marls and clays initially built up the Prüm. Since the reservoir overflowed, most of the more easily clearable clays have been removed and the hard boulders are left over. Although they still block the path of the Prüm today, they only cause low inclines that can hardly be called a waterfall .

tourism

The Irrel waterfalls are one of the tourist attractions of the South Eifel nature park and the Trier region. They are well developed through hiking trails. A wooden bridge crosses the rapids and makes the gorge tangible. The Irreler waterfalls are genetically related to the Teufelsschlucht , an accessible crevice just two kilometers southwest of it. Both natural phenomena are explained in a visitor center in the nature park above the Devil's Gorge.
