Irving Saladino (born January 23, 1983 in Colón ) is a Panamanian athlete who was world champion in 2007 and Olympic champion in the long jump in 2008 .
Life
At the Junior World Championships in 2002 Saladino did not reach the final fight in the long jump with 7.30 m in tenth place. 2003 in Barquisimeto at the South American Championships he won bronze with 7.46 m. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he was in his qualifying group with 7.42 m 18th and a total of 36th of the qualification. At 8.12 m he was able to jump the 8-meter mark for the first time in 2004. In 2005 he jumped 8.51 m with the help of the wind and 8.29 m under regular wind conditions. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he jumped 8.20 m with a tail wind of 2.8 m / s and finished sixth.
In Moscow at the 2006 World Indoor Championships , he improved the South American indoor record five times in qualification and final and won the silver medal with 8.29 m behind the Ghanaian Ignisious Gaisah with 8.30 m and ahead of the Italian Andrew Howe with 8.19 m. In the 2006 outdoor season, he won five out of six Golden League sports festivals and the World Cup .
In the 2007 outdoor season he remained undefeated until the World Championships in Osaka . In the final at the World Championships, he took the sole lead in front of defending champion Dwight Phillips with 8.46 m in the third attempt . In the last attempt Andrew Howe surpassed him with 8.47 m. Saladino was able to increase to 8.57 m in his last attempt, the last jump of the competition, and became world champion. Saladino won the first gold medal for Panama at World Athletics Championships.
In August 2008, Saladino won gold in the long jump at the Beijing Olympics . With 8.34 m he took the lead in the fourth attempt before Godfrey Khotso Mokoena and held the lead until the end of the competition. With this jump he won the first ever gold medal for Panama at the Olympic Games and the first medal since Lloyd LaBeach's two bronze medals in 1948.
After that Saladino could no longer build on his successes. At the 2009 World Championships , the 2010 Indoor World Championships , the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he did not jump a valid attempt, he was eliminated from the qualification.
Saladino is 1.83 m tall and weighs 70 kg.
