Irwin Shaw
Irwin Shaw (born February 27, 1913 in New York City , † May 16, 1984 in Davos , Switzerland ; actually Irwin Gilbert Shamforoff ) was an American writer and screenwriter .
Life
Shaw came from a Russian-Jewish family from the Bronx who moved to Brooklyn after his birth and changed Shamforoff's family name to Shaw. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1934. While in college, he was already writing for the college newspaper and began writing scripts for radio novels such as Dick Tracy in 1935 .
His first play, Bury the Dead , premiered in 1936. He wrote other plays for the left-wing Group Theater . He wrote some screenplays for Hollywood in the 1940s . During the Second World War he served as a special officer in North Africa and Europe (France, England, Germany). About this experience he wrote his first novel The Young Lions ( The Young Lions ), who published in 1948 and 1958 with Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift was filmed. He had lived in Switzerland since the early 1950s, where he died of heart failure in Davos in 1984.
In Germany, his most successful novels appeared in the 1970s when they were made into a film for television: Rich and poor and evening in Byzantium .
