Islamic Revolutionary Court

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Islamic Revolutionary Court is a special court of the Islamic Republic of Iran against those who want to overthrow the Islamic government in Iran. It was established in 1979 after the Islamic Revolution (overthrow of the Shah of Persia). From February 1979 to June 1981 Sadegh Chalkhali was the chief judge of the Revolutionary Court.

Jurisprudence

According to official information from the Iranian government, the judiciary pursues the following objectives:

  1. Against all attacks on the internal and external security of the country that occur through fighting or other behavior worldwide.
  2. Against defamatory and blasphemous statements against the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini and his successor as head of state Seyyed Ali Khamene'i .
  3. Against the conspiracy against the Islamic Republic of Iran and the prevention of the carrying of weapons, terrorism and the prevention of the destruction of buildings.
  4. Prevention of espionage .
  5. Against all crimes related to smuggling and drugs .
  6. All proceedings related to Article 49 (Seizure) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The court also persecutes non-clerics who, as government employees, do not support the armed Islamic revolution. The Islamic Revolutionary Court also holds closed court courts . In the past, however, details did leak to the public through government-related indiscretion. The Islamic Revolutionary Court does not have a jury. The decision and judgment is in the hands of a single judge.

Human rights violations

The Islamic Revolutionary Court is known in the past, especially in the 1980s, for the conviction and execution of thousands of supporters of a secular state as well as of communists and supporters of the People's Mujahedin . After the Iranian presidential elections, which were controversial because of allegations of fraud, the 15th division of the court, chaired by Judge Abolqasem Salavati, sentenced numerous opposition members to long prison terms and to death for alleged hostility towards God .
