history

The oldest document that mentions the name of the village is a parchment from AD 826 that is in the Milan State Archives. Since then, many documents have reported life in a residential area of considerable size. In the 13th century the parish had seven churches and chapels, while the nobles of Ispra are remembered among those who contributed most to the construction of the nearby hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso in Leggiuno .

In 1276 the bloody battle between the Torriani and supporters of Archbishop Ottone Visconti was fought for the rule of the state of Milan. A testimony to the civil and military events of that time can be found in the ruins of the San Cristoforo Castle on the top of Monte del Prete (the main hill).

Ispra followed the fate of the Duchy of Milan in the feud of Laveno-Mombello , which was sold in 1449 by the captains of the Community of Milan to Count Vitaliano Borromeo, the feud was then divided between these and the Visconti Borromeo, who were replaced by the Litta Visconti Arese were. In 1636, after the Battle of Tornavento, Ispra was sacked by the French troops. For a long time it was a border country on the lake that separated the Duchy of Milan from the Kingdom of Sardinia and was the seat of a customs post during the time of Austrian rule.

At the end of the 19th century there were ten companies working the limestone and a class of skilled workers was formed. Built on the shores of the lake, the ovens were used on site for the special boats that came to Milan through Sesto Calende and Naviglio Grande . This had created an important productively induced activity that declined in the years that followed. As a result, the limestone was industrialized on site from 1956 to 1958 and cut into various sizes, distributed by truck and sold to other sea firing systems such as that of Caldè, the furnace that was last closed in 1960.

In the second half of the 20th century, work began on building Euratom , now the Joint Research Center (JRC).
