Saronno is a municipality in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

Geographical location

The city of Saronno is northwest of Milan , halfway to Milan Malpensa Airport . The distance from the southern edge of the Alps in the north is approx. 40 km. The municipality covers an area of 10.86 km². The two factions Cassina Ferrara and la Colombara belong to Saronno. The municipality of Saronno borders in the north on Rovello Porro , in the northeast on Cogliate , in the east on Ceriano Laghetto and Solaro , in the south on Caronno Pertusella and Origgio and in the west on Uboldo and Gerenzano .

City structure

In the inner city area around the city center are the zones Prealpi (north), Piscina (east) and Santuario (west). The small river Lura runs through the city in a north-south direction and is mostly built over in the city center.

climate

As part of the Italian heartland away from coastal influence, Saronno lies in the continental, semi-humid, subtropical zone (B2sh). Typical for the area is a general lack of wind with corresponding smog problems, with the exception of a few discreet days of strong wind. The moderate precipitation falls inhomogeneously and is concentrated in individual, heavy showers.

history

The location was first mentioned in a document in 796. In the said document, Johannes de Vico Salomno declares that he has received a sum of money from Erminaldo for the pledge of his property "Vico Salomno". Subsequently, the settlement bore different names, including Solomno, Serogno, Sorogno, Serono and Sarono. A wave of plague struck the city in 1629 and claimed 1,500 victims. On March 18, 1827, a fire destroyed the district of San Cristoforo, of which the Monumento della Riconoscenza still reminds today . 1879 marked the beginning of a further upswing with the completion of the Saronno-Milan railway line. Saronno belonged to the area of Milan until 1927, but was then assigned to the province of Varese and since then occupies an extreme south-east peripheral location. Linguistically, the city has its own local dialect, whose slang expressions, proverbs and nicknames from the 19th and 20th centuries are described in book form ( Saronno in dialetto by Giuseppe Radice, Istituto Prealpi Saronno).

Theater and cinema

The Giuditta Pasta theater in the Santuario district is worth mentioning. In addition to theater and children's performances, dance ensembles from other cities also put their skills to the test there. Saronno has two commercial cinemas (Multisala Saronnese, v. S. Giuseppe) and the Cinema Pellico (v. PL Monti). The art house cinema Cinema Prealpi rounds off the offer.

Museums

The Giuseppe Giannetti Museum shows porcelain, maiolica and ceramics from the collection of the Saronnes industrialist of the same name. It is one of the most important of its kind in Europe. There is also a railway museum on Via Rimembranze.

Buildings

Sacred buildings

The provost church of Santi Pietro e Paolo is located in the central Piazza della Libertà. To the west is the Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi.

San Francesco, Saronno

The Santuario della Beata Vergine dei Miracoli pilgrimage church , whose foundation stone was laid in 1498, is located in the Santuario district . The renaissance building was planned and managed by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo , who was also involved in the construction of the Milan Cathedral . According to legend, a young Saronnesian named Pedretto was miraculously healed in this place by the Mother of God after several years of bed rest, who then asked him to build a church in her honor. In the middle of the 16th century, work began on a structural expansion, as the church had become too small for the many pilgrims.

Villa Gianetti

Another two churches in the city are the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate and the Church of San Giacomo.

Civil buildings

In addition to the sacred buildings, the Palazzo Visconti, Casa Morandi, Casa Canonico and Villa Gianetti are also worth seeing. The latter belongs to the family of the same name and was built around 1920. As early as 1923 it was given to the city to become the mayor's office.

Parks

The city park in Piazza d'Italia is modest. A new, large inner city park is to be built in 2008 in the southwest on a former industrial site. Saronno's house park is the PARCO DEL LURA north of the city, which was recently designed very attractively. In addition to cycle paths northwards to Cadorago, it also includes a fitness trail close to the city, facilities for picnicking and playgrounds. Hidden access: from Saronno follow Via Don Volpi northwards. With the PARCO GROANE one reaches 2 km east of the city at Ceriano Laghetto an extensive flat natural area, which extends up to the 15 km south located Bollate. Cyclists and mountain bikers will get their money's worth on signposted paths and forest slopes in the sometimes unspoilt terrain. The website contains a good map of the north and south parts for orientation.

Sports

As in large parts of Italy, football (Calcio) plays a central role in municipal sports. Saronno has four football clubs: FBC Saronno, Amor Sportiva, Robur Saronno and Saronno Calcio.

Amaretto di Saronno

Culinary specialties

With the Amaretto Disaronno , the city name is also known beyond Italy's borders. The almond macaroons called amaretti are also a specialty of Saronno and are originally produced and sold by the Lazzaroni company. The small, tough macaroons are typically dipped in coffee and then eaten. With the Amaretti Morbidi , they are also available in a softer version - with a lemon or mandarin aroma.
