Jörg Drehmel (born May 3, 1945 in Trantow ) is a former German athlete and Olympic medalist who - starting for the GDR - was successful in the triple jump . His greatest successes were the silver medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and the European championship title in 1971.

Life

Jörg Drehmel had initially tried his hand at javelin thrower and decathlete and in 1966 switched to the triple jump. His first major success was the European Cup in 1970 , where he was also the first German to achieve a record triple jump over 17 meters. His winning distance of 17.16 m at the European Championships in 1971 could not be counted as a record because there was too much tailwind. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he jumped 17.31 m, a personal best.

He started for the ASK Vorwärts Potsdam and trained with Heinz Rieger . When he competed, he was 1.87 m tall and weighed 83 kg. In the documents on doping in the GDR that became public after the fall of the Wall, the doped athletes also included the name of Drehel.

After the end of his sports career, Jörg Drehmel became a junior coach for long and triple jump from 1977 . After German reunification , he lost this position and later became an employee of the Brandenburg State Sports Association. He is a volunteer jumping instructor at SC Potsdam . Drehel lives in Stahnsdorf near Potsdam .
