Jörg Leichtfried (* 18th June 1967 in Bruck an der Mur ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ), was between June 2015 and May 2016 the provincial government of the Styrian government and was a member of the European Parliament (6th to 8th Term). From May 2016 to December 2017 he was Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology .

Education and professional career

Jörg Leichtfried studied law at the University of Graz from 1987 to 1994 . After graduating there, he completed the court year and trainee practice from 1994 to 1995. He then worked from 1995 to 1999 as a legal advisor at the Styrian Chamber of Labor and from 1998 to 2004 head of the Citizens Service Department in the administration of his home town, the municipality of Bruck an der Mur .

Political career

From 1994 Leichtfried was deputy state chairman of the Young Generation Styria, a youth organization of the SPÖ. He held this office until 2000. In 1999 he was a candidate for the National Council of the Young Generation of Styria. From 2000 to 2002 Leichtfried was Federal Chairman of the Young Generation Austria. He was also deputy state party chairman of the SPÖ Styria from 2000 to 2014.

Main focus of work in the European Parliament

Leichtfried was elected member of the European Parliament for the first time in 2004. He was re-elected in 2009 and 2014. Since then, he has also been the head of the SPÖ delegation in the European Parliament and, since 2009, Vice-President of the Animal Welfare Intergroup and, from July 2014 to June 2015, Deputy Chairman of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D ).

Leichtfried was a member of the Committee on International Trade , the Delegation for relations with the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Delegation for relations with the Mercosur countries, as well as Vice-Chair of the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly . He was also an alternate member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the Delegation for Relations with the Countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

On June 23, 2015, he left the European Parliament because he had been elected a member of the Styrian state government.

Styrian state government

On June 16, 2015, Jörg Leichtfried was elected as Regional Councilor for Transport, Environment, Energy Efficiency and Sport in the SPÖ-ÖVP coalition government under Hermann Schützenhöfer , after he had been designated by the SPÖ chief negotiator Michael Schickhofer on June 10, 2015 . After moving to the federal government in May 2016, he was succeeded by Anton Lang .

Federal Minister and Member of Parliament

On May 18, 2016 Leichtfried was sworn in as Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology , taking over this office from the previous Minister Gerald Klug . After the National Council election in 2017 , Norbert Hofer (FPÖ) succeeded him as Minister in this office. Since then, Jörg Leichtfried has been a member of the National Council .

In December 2019 he was succeeded by Christoph Leitl as President of the European Movement Austria (EBÖ) , Leichtfried became EBÖ Vice-President.
