Jacek Malczewski (born July 15, 1854 in Radom , † October 8, 1929 in Krakow ) was a Polish painter of modernism and symbolism .

Life

Malczewski grew up in an impoverished middle-class family and was initially tutored by his parents. When he was 13 he was sent to an uncle's estate. In 1871 he moved to Cracow, where he attended grammar school and was a guest student at the School of Fine Arts, which later became the Cracow Academy of Art . Its first director, the famous history painter Jan Matejko , recognized Malczewski's talent and persuaded him to start studying art straight away, which he then continued at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris and with Henri Lehmann . In 1896 he returned to the Cracow Academy as a professor (until 1900 and again from 1912 to 1921). From 1912 to 1914 he was rector of the university. In 1897 he was one of the founders of the Cracow artists' association Sztuka .

Malczewski initially painted rural genre pictures and realistic history paintings in the style of Romanticism in predominantly dark colors under the influence of Arthur Grottger . Around 1890 he began to turn to symbolism, but the content remained true to the historical themes. His most famous paintings include Śmierć Ellenai (The Death of Helen, 1883), Wigilia na Syberii (Christmas Eve in Siberia, 1892), Melancholia (Melancholy, 1890–1894), Błędne koło (The Vicious Circle, 1895–1897) and Hamlet Polski. Portret Aleksandra Wielopolskiego (1903). He also painted a number of self-portraits.

Despite his numerous stays abroad (France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Turkey), he was most strongly influenced by Polish art and folklore. Through his work he became a central figure in the Young Poland movement at the turn of the century .

He is buried in the crypt of Deserving Poles on Skałka Hill in Kraków. Since 1980 he has given its name to Malczewski Point , a headland of King George Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica . It is there that Painters Cove is named in honor of him and Jan Matejko .
