Jack Klugman (2009)

Jacob Joachim "Jack" Klugman (born April 27, 1922 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † December 24, 2012 in Northridge , California ) was an American film and television actor . He was best known for the film The Twelve Jurors and the sitcom Männerwirtschaft alongside Tony Randall ; through the title role of Dr. R. Quincy in the television series Quincy , he was able to consolidate his popularity.

Professional background

Klugman came from a middle-class Jewish family in Philadelphia and began his career after serving in the United States Army during World War II . During his time as an aspiring actor in New York City in the late 1940s, Klugman temporarily shared an apartment with colleague Charles Bronson (then Charles Dennis Buchinsky ).

Klugman was best known for his role as sports journalist Oscar Madison in the US television series Männerwirtschaft (orig. The Odd Couple ), which was broadcast in Germany by ZDF . His partner on the series was Tony Randall as Felix Unger . The series was produced from 1970 to 1975 and was based on Neil Simon's play A Strange Couple (1965), which was filmed in 1968 with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau .

Subsequently, Klugman received further offers for roles in comedic television series, but after the success of the men's economy consciously decided against it. Instead, he took on the role of coroner Dr. R. Quincy in the eponymous television series Quincy , which was produced from 1976 to 1983 and which was an equally great success for him.

Since the death of Jack Warden on July 19, 2006, Klugman was the last surviving cast member from the legal drama The Twelve Jurors of Sidney Lumet . Originally, Klugman was supposed to play again in the play The Twelve Jurors in March 2012 . A few days earlier, however, he canceled for health reasons and died that same year.

Like Oscar Madison in Men's Business , Klugman was a fan of horse racing in real life. One of his horses, Jaklin Klugman, won several awards in 1980 after several victories.

In 1984 Klugman was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx . In 1989 he underwent an operation on the vocal cords and part of his larynx had to be removed. After that, Klugman was forced to relearn how to speak.

In 2005, Klugman published a book about his longstanding friendship with colleague Tony Randall : Tony And Me: A Story of Friendship . Klugman says of Randall that he was the best friend he ever had. He wrote about their ever-functioning relationship and how good Randall had been to him after his cancer surgery.

Jack Klugman married Brett Somers in 1953 , with whom he had two sons. The two separated in 1974 but never divorced. On February 2, 2008, at the age of 85, he married his long-time partner Peggy Crosby, after Somers passed away on September 15, 2007.

Jack Klugman died on December 24, 2012 at the age of 90. The ceremony and farewell took place at the Mount Sinai Jewish Cemetery in Los Angeles. The urn itself should be in the family's possession. He was reportedly buried in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery .
