Jacqueline Gourault (born November 20, 1950 in Montoire-sur-le-Loir , Loir-et-Cher ) is a French politician ( UDF , MoDem ). From 2014 to 2017 she was Vice President of the French Senate . Since 2018 she has been Minister for Territorial Cohesion in the Philippe II cabinet ; she kept this position in the Castex cabinet .

Life and political career

Gourault grew up as the daughter of cattle dealers in the small community of Montoire-sur-le-Loir near Vendôme in central France. She completed a history degree at Tours University and taught history and geography at a Lycée in Blois . She is married and has two children.

As a member of the civil union pour la démocratie française (UDF), she was elected to the municipal council of La Chaussée-Saint-Victor in 1983. In March 1989 she was elected mayor , which she held until March 2014. Since her resignation as mayor, she has been a member of the La Chaussée-Saint-Victor municipal council again. From 1992 to 2001 she was a member of the regional council of the Center region , and from 1998 to 2001 also of the general council of the Loir-et-Cher department .

From 2001 to 2005 she was president of the community association Communauté d'agglomération de Blois ( "Agglopolys"), to which the city of Blois and surrounding communities have come together. In the 2004 regional elections she was the UDF's top candidate in the Center region, and her list received 13.7% of the vote in the first ballot. From 2004 to 2014 she was Vice-President of the Association des maires de France (Association of French Mayors).

From October 2001 to July 2017 she was a member of the French Senate , in which she represented the Loir-et-Cher department. Since the UDF split in 2007, she has been a member of the Mouvement démocrate (MoDem) party. Since then she has been a member of the party executive committee and is vice-chairwoman of MoDem. From 2011 to 2014 she was the chairwoman of the Senate delegation for local authorities and decentralization . From October 2014 to June 2017 she was Vice President of the Senate.

On 21 June 2017 in Gouralt was the second Cabinet Philippe to Deputy Minister of the French Interior Ministry appointed (under Interior Minister Gérard Collomb ). Following the victory of the Corsican nationalists in the regional elections in December 2017, Prime Minister Édouard appointed Philippe Gourault as special envoy for Corsica. In August 2018, the head of government also entrusted them with the design of a new administrative unit in Alsace (formerly the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments ). On October 16, 2018, she was appointed Minister for Territorial Cohesion and Relations with Local Authorities.
