Jacques Witta (born April 22, 1934 in Paris ) is a French film editor .

Life

Jacques Witta grew up with two siblings in Paris. His single mother occasionally found work as a script girl for directors such as Jacques Prévert and Marcel Carné during the 1930s . Given her uncertain financial situation, she didn't want her son to get into the film business as well. Witta, who was very interested in drawing and painting in his youth, trained as a bookbinder. However, since he subsequently lacked contact with the publishing industry and instead knew numerous people in the film industry, he finally got into the film business. Through an acquaintance he got work in the production of a US series that was filmed in Paris at the time. He was then assistant editor for Orson Welles ' Mr. Arkadin (1955).

From the late 1950s Witta worked as an independent editor for French film , but, with the exception of Slogan (1969), was only used in larger productions from the mid-1970s. Witta worked on the crime drama Die Entfesselten (1975) with Jean-Louis Trintignant and Catherine Deneuve in the lead roles, as well as on the comedies Ham with Egg (1976) and Computer morden leise (1976), directed by Gérard Pirès . For director Claude Berri he was then responsible for editing the comedies The Little French Women - The First Time (1976) and All Beginnings Is Fun (1977).

For Jean Becker's thriller Ein Murderischer Sommer (1983) with Isabelle Adjani , Witta received the César in the category of best editing . Ten years later he was able to win the French film award for Krzysztof Kieślowski's Drei Farben: Blau (1993) again. For Kieślowski he had previously made the editing of The Two Lives of Veronika (1991). Another collaboration between Wittas and Kieślowski followed in 1994 with Drei Farben: Rot . Witta also worked several times with Jean Becker, for example on A Summer in the Country (1999), Dialogue with My Gardener (2007), The Labyrinth of Words (2010) and Bon rétablissement! (2014).

Witta occasionally teaches budding film editors and assistant editors, including in 2003 at a festival in Galway , Ireland.
