Jacqui Smith (2007)

Jacqueline Jill Smith (born November 3, 1962 in Malvern , Worcestershire ) is a British Labor Party politician . From 2007 to 2009 she was Home Secretary in the Gordon Brown government . Jacqui Smith was the first woman to head the UK Home Office.

In the general election on May 1, 1997 , she was elected to the UK House of Commons for the first time as a Labor Party MP in the Redditch constituency. In 2003 she was appointed a member of the Privy Council .

Life

Jacqueline Smith comes from a family of teachers. She went to school at Dyson Perrins High School in Malvern. She then studied Philosophy , Politics and Economics at Hertford College of Oxford University . After graduating, she taught at Arrow Vale High School in Redditch from 1986 , then became a lecturer in management and economics at Haybridge High School in Hagley and rose to become Head of Economics . In 1997, however, she decided to give up this job and go into politics.

In the elections to the British House of Commons on May 1, 1997 , she ran for the Labor Party in the Redditch constituency. On the wave of Tony Blair's landslide victory, Jacqui Smith also won a seat in Parliament for the Labor Party and moved into the House of Commons as one of the so-called “Blair Babes” . The term “Blair Babes” coined by the media referred to the group of young women between the ages of 30 and 40 who entered the British House of Commons on the wave of Tony Blair's overwhelming election victory.

She first worked on the Commons treasury select committee for the then Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Prime Minister Gordon Brown . In 1999 she moved to the Department for Education and Skills, which has been headed by David Blunkett since 1997 . Here she became State Secretary responsible for the school sector (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for School Standards) and worked with the Minister of State for School Standards, Estelle Morris.

In the general election of June 7, 2001 , she was able to hold her constituency Redditch or seat in the House of Commons and was Minister of State in the Department of Health.

As part of a government change on June 12, 2003, she moved to the Department of Trade and Industry as vice-president . At the same time, she became Deputy Minister for Women and Equality and a member of the Privy Council . In that capacity, she published government proposals for registered partnerships that would allow homosexual couples to enter into marriage-like relationships.

After the general election on May 5, 2005 , Smith returned to the Department for Education and Skills and became Vice Minister under Ruth Kelly, who was appointed Minister of Education in December 2004 as part of a “reshuffle” - regrouping of the government team . As Minister of State for School Standards, she was again responsible for the school sector. She took over this post from Stephen Twigg who had lost his parliamentary seat to the conservative rival David Burrowes in the elections.

In 2006 she also became the leader of the Labor Party in the House of Commons. As so-called "boss-Einpeitscherin" ( "Chief Whip" ) of the Labor Party was Smith responsible for ensuring that the deputies of their party voted in accordance with the provisions of the party leadership on controversial decisions. This was no easy task after the Labor majority fell from 190 to 55. She had to balance the Blair and Brown camps while also managing the transition from Blair to Brown.

After Gordon Brown was named Prime Minister in June 2007 , Smith became Home Secretary in the new administration. A car bomb was found in London just one day after taking office . The following day there was a car bomb attack on the entrance to Glasgow International Airport. The government then issued the highest terror warning level.

In the British General Election in 2010 , she lost her constituency to Karen Lumley of the Conservative Party and left the House of Commons.

Anti-Islamic Islam

Jacqui Smith has ensured that Islamic terrorism is labeled "anti-Islamic" because, in her opinion, Islamic terrorism is harmful to Islam and therefore anti-Islamic.

criticism

She hit the headlines for smoking cannabis several times and for watching porn movies at government expense, and Richard Timney issued a statement promising to repay the pay-per-view bill allegedly accidentally submitted by his wife for reimbursement . On June 2, 2009, she announced her resignation for reshuffle on June 5, 2009.
