James Gay-Rees

James Gay-Rees (* 1967 in Sunderland ) is a British film producer . He won an Oscar for producing the documentary Amy at the 2016 Academy Awards .

Life

James Gay-Rees studied Economics and Accounting at the University of Southampton . He began his film career in 1991 at the Miramax film studio in London . He then moved to the United States, where he first worked in New York and then worked for Orbit Productions in Los Angeles . From 2002 he switched to the production of documentaries and moved back to Great Britain. His first production, Exit Through the Gift Shop, about street artist Banksy , was nominated for “Best Documentary” at the 2011 Academy Awards. His second film, Senna, about Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna , was also highly praised and won a British Academy Film Award in the Best Documentary Film category . His other productions include McCullin (about Don McCullin ), All This Mayhem (about skateboarding in Australia) and Palio (about the Palio di Siena horse race ). In 2015 he produced the documentary Amy about the pop singer Amy Winehouse, who died four years earlier . It was the second collaboration with Asif Kapadia after Senna . The film received an Oscar in the category “Best Documentary” at the 2016 Academy Awards. His most recent productions were the documentaries Ronaldo about Cristiano Ronaldo and Supersonic about the band Oasis .

He also produced the two feature films The Wedding Video and The Quiet Ones .
