Exit Through the Gift Shop is a 2010 documentary by British street artist Banksy .

Plot and background

The film revolves around Thierry Guetta , a passionate French filmmaker, who films his cousin, the French artist Invader , while applying his colorful mosaics based on the computer game Space Invaders , and through this he met Banksy in the spring of 2006. Guetta promises to shoot Banksy the best street art documentary, but is convinced by Banksy to act as a street artist himself. At this point Banksy takes over the direction. Thierry Guetta chooses the pseudonym Mr. Brainwash and starts producing art on a large scale. This development is supported and documented by Banksy.

Shepard Fairey (OBEY) revealed this plot at a press conference held by Bonhams & Butterfields, an auction house in Los Angeles , on November 5, 2008. In this context, Mr. Brainwash's exhibition Life Is Beautiful in Los Angeles is an indication of Banksy's influence, because the exhibition is a quote from Banksy's exhibition Barely Legal in the same gallery in 2006. In the film itself there is footage of Shepard Fairey, Guetta's cousin Invader and Banksy himself, which has been made unrecognizable to the viewer in order to preserve his anonymity .

criticism

The editorial team of Cinema says: “By chance, amateur filmmaker Thierry becomes aware of the mysterious graffiti artist Banksy and is planning a report on the legendary sprayer, who actually keeps his identity hidden. But Banksy turns the tables: He points the camera at Thierry and accompanies the crazy Frenchman on his way to the successful artist Mr. Brainwash. The result is an entertaining and ironic documentary with critical swipes at media and commerce. Conclusion: refreshing and entertaining experimental work on street art ”.

Carsten Baumgardt from Filmstarts saw the Banksys documentary, which, in his opinion, “is basically not, but rather a mockumentary . And what a kind: The Briton takes the game of confusion to extremes on various levels and entertains colossally with this targeted disinformation. [...] "Exit Through The Gift Shop" is like street art itself: rough, unadulterated, crude and chaotic. […] Banksy, who doesn't obey a script and up to halfway through the work didn't even know that it was going to be a film, doesn't follow an orderly dramaturgy and also mixes up the stylistic approaches. His film is seemingly unorganized and changes protagonists several times. [...] That is wild, that is bold, that is absurd, but somehow great. "

The lexicon of international film describes the film as a “mockumentary” that plays with identities and “gives an insight into the work of well-known 'street art' artists”, “whereby it concisely captures the guerrilla mood of their actions and refines their relationship to the art market reflected ”.

publication

Exit through the Gift Shop was selected for the Sundance Film Festival , where it celebrated its world premiere on January 24, 2010. On February 14, 2010 it was shown at the Berlinale 2010 , which was followed by other screenings at various film festivals.

The film ran until March 4, 2010 with two screenings per day in a specially set up cinema. It is located in a bunker on Leake Street in London . The cinema was designed in the Banksy style. The film was released in British cinemas on March 5, 2010. The film was shown in the United States on April 16, 2010. The film opened in theaters in Germany on October 21, 2010. In the US, the film grossed over $ 170,000 on the opening weekend  . Overall, the film generated revenue of just under 3.3 million US dollars in the USA.

It is speculated that the film is a typical Banksy swipe at the commercial marketing of street art and graffiti. This assumption is underlined by Banksy's introductory words, which were recorded before the performance in Berlin: “I guess my ambition was to make a film that would do for graffiti art what Karate Kid did for martial arts - a film that would get every schoolkid in the world picking up a spray can and having a go… As it turns out, I think we might have a film that does for street art what Jaws did for waterskiing. " Quote:" What came out was a film for street art that does what Jaws did for water skiing. "

Awards

Exit Through the Gift Shop won documentary awards from the Austin Film Critics Association , Central Ohio Film Critics Association , Chicago Film Critics Association , Online Film Critics Society , San Diego Film Critics Society and Toronto Film Critics Association, and the Kansas City Film Critics Circle . In 2011 the film won an Independent Spirit Award .
