Jan de Bont (born October 22, 1943 in Eindhoven , Province of Noord-Brabant ) is a Dutch cameraman , film director and film producer .

Life

Jan de Bont was born into a large family with 14 children and grew up in Eindhoven. As a 12-year-old boy, he made Normal-8 films and took jobs at wedding events.

He later studied at the Amsterdam Film Academy . There he met Paul Verhoeven , with whom he often worked. Together they made, among other things, the short film De Worstelaar in 1970 and the feature film What am I seeing ...! What do I see…! with Verhoeven directing and de Bont working as cameraman. The two gained a foothold in the US in the early 1980s and later worked there again in the films Flesh and Blood (1985) and Basic Instinct (1992). Jan de Bont has also worked as a cameraman in several major Hollywood productions: Die Hard (1988), Hunt for Red October (1990), Like a Light in a Dark Night (1992) and Focal Point LA - The Professionals Are Back (1992), in which he has a brief cameo as a Dutch cameraman. As a cameraman he has worked on more than 50 productions.

In 1994 Jan de Bont first directed. His action film Speed, starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock , was a huge hit.
