After his career as a player he was head coach in Schweinfurt, where he led his team in the 2002/03 season to first place in the Oberliga championship round. In the playoffs, however, the Mighty Dogs failed because of the EC peiting . In the following season he reached the playoffs with his team and again had to admit defeat in the quarterfinals against the later promoted Lausitzer Füchse .
In the 2004/05 season he was assistant coach at the Hannover Scorpions in the DEL alongside Kevin Gaudet . During the 2005/06 season he came to the mosquitos food as a replacement for the previously dismissed Anton Krinner , with whom he was able to maintain relegation in the 2nd Bundesliga . In the following two seasons he reached the playoffs with the mosquitoes food and failed both times in the quarterfinals.
After the bankruptcy of the mosquitoes, he moved to the 2008/09 season together with assistant coach Anton Raubal to the Schwenninger Wild Wings , which he trained until December 7th. The Wild Wings canceled his contract after a mixed start to the season.
In April 2010 Pasanen was presented again at the mosquito food . In the 2010/11 season he was coach and sporting director for the league club. In the 2012/13 season he signed a contract with the Iserlohn Roosters , where he initially worked as an assistant coach alongside Doug Mason . After Doug Mason's leave of absence on October 29, 2013, Jari Pasanen took over the position of head coach.
He managed to lead the team from last to tenth place and to beat the favored team from Munich in the qualifying games (pre-playoffs). In the following two seasons, the Iserlohn coach, who had been the most successful to date, led the Roosters to the quarter-finals. In the 2015/2016 season , the team achieved third place, the best position so far in the DEL at the end of the main round. On October 10, 2017, Pasanen was given leave of absence as head coach in Iserlohn. At this time, the Sauerlanders were in last place in the table and had started the 2017/18 game year with three wins and seven defeats. The club justified the separation with the "lack of tactical development" of the team.
In April 2018 he moved to the Frederikshavn White Hawks in the Danish Metal Ligaen.
