Jarlshof is the most famous prehistoric archaeological site on the north of Scotland located Shetland Islands . The place is near the southern tip of the main island Mainland near the settlements of Sumburgh and Grutness .

The densely concentrated structures include buildings from the Bronze Age , similar to those of Skara Brae on Mainland Orkney . One of these is believed to be the home of an Irish bronze smith. The complex includes a Broch from the Iron Age , half destroyed by erosion , a complex of wheelhouses , a basement or English Earth House and buildings from the time of the Picts . There are also longhouses of the Vikings and a medieval farmhouse. The 17th century mansion is mentioned in Walter Scott's novella The Pirate . The prehistoric sites were discovered at the end of the 19th century. Your fictional name goes back to Walter Scott. From 1931 to 1935, Alexander Ormiston Curle carried out extensive excavations here.
