history
In 1994 the band got a contract with the record label BMG Hamburg and entered the charts with their first work entitled Jazzkantine . In 1996 the band received the German Echo Music Prize in the Best Jazz Production category ; the group also received the German Jazz Award and the Golden Ear . The band was also nominated for an Echo for the album "Hell's Kitchen".
Since 1994 the band has played more than 2000 concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including at the Montreux Jazz Festival . On April 6, 2002, as part of the “hr3 @ night” series of events, a concert was held in the Kassel exhibition halls together with the hr big band (director: Jörg Achim Keller ). With the projects Tanzzkantine , Brunswick, Brunsoft ! , Ölper 12 Pöints , Ölper 12 Pöints - the second season , Ölper 12 Pöints - the third season , Unser Eintracht , DaDaDa and Hyper Hyper six successful co-productions were carried out with the Braunschweig State Theater . In 2008 the CD Hell's Kitchen was released , on which the band reinterpreted hard rock songs in the jazz canteen sound (with guest singers Xavier Naidoo , Max Mutzke , Tom Gaebel and Pat Appleton from DePhazz ). The album initially reached number one on the iTunes jazz charts and later in July 2008 also number one on the official German jazz charts .
Since April 2011, the rhythm group of the Jazzkantine has been performing in the play Meat is My Vegetables as “Tiffanys” in the Braunschweig State Theater.
Another project of the Jazzkantine is the Blauhausband. Four to five times a year this band jams in the small house of the Braunschweig State Theater. In addition to members of the Jazzkantine (regular formation: Christian Eitner, Tom Bennecke, Andy Lindner, Christian Winninghoff, Heiner Schmitz), guest musicians have been invited, including Roger Cicero , Dr. Ring-Ding , Sam Leigh-Brown ( Frank Popp Ensemble ) and Tom Gaebel .
Another theater production with the participation of the Jazzkantine premiered in December 2011: The Braunschweiger Weihnachtsgeschichte . Together with long-time companion Peter Schanz (author and director), the band presented a nativity play in a historical mirror tent on Braunschweig's Martinikirchplatz.
In March 2012 the Jazzkantine released a new album on Universal Music with the title Jazzkantine plays folk songs . For the first time, the band interprets classic German folk songs in a new style and mixes them with influences from hip-hop, reggae and soul in a typical jazz canteen style. As on previous albums, the band uses the help of well-known guests, such as Pat Appleton from DePhazz or Sam Leigh-Brown from the Frank Popp Ensemble . The third oil season with Ö 3.0 followed from August to September 2012 - the oil season is back .
In mid-September 2013 the album Ultrahocherhitzt was released , on which the band returned to their roots. Joo Kraus (tp) and Nils Wogram (tb) as well as the singer Nora Becker can be heard as guest musicians . In October 2014, for the 20th birthday of the Jazzkantine, the band organized a concert in cooperation with the NDR Bigband in the Braunschweig State Theater. At the same time, the album was released without connector in collaboration with the NDR big band. As guests, u. a. Smudo , Aleksey and Segnore Rossi with. In September 2016 the twelfth studio album with Old's Cool of the Jazzkantine was released, another concept album: Jazzkantine embarked on a journey back in time to the eighties and shed light on the beginnings of hip-hop. There are reunions with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Eric B. & Rakim, EPMD, Public Enemy , NWA, Tone-Loc, Afrika Bambaataa and the Jungle Brothers. While playing with beats and scratches, sounds and samples were collaged and old-school classics were reinterpreted in the seething brew of a jam session of jazz, funk and rap. Bandleader Christian Eitner says: “It was great fun rummaging around in the old record boxes - in 1990 we made a cut. The result is a mix of our favorite tracks, but also of songs that appeared harmonious or rhythmically attractive in order to wrap them in a new guise. "
In her album Mit Pauken und Trompeten from August 2019, the song Eine Honor tells the 25-year-old Jazzkantine story - compressed in 4:15 minutes.
