Jean-François Bergier

Jean-François Bergier (born December 5, 1931 in Lausanne ; † October 29, 2009 in Blonay ; resident in Lausanne) was a Swiss social and economic historian .

After studying at the University of Lausanne , he received a diploma in archival science and palaeography from the École nationale des chartes in 1957 . His diploma thesis dealt with Geneva as a trading center between 1480 and 1540. In 1963, Bergier received his doctorate from the University of Geneva , where he then worked until 1969 as a full professor of economic and social history. From 1969 to 1999 he held this position at the Institute for History at ETH Zurich .

From 1997 to December 2001, Jean-François Bergier presided over the Independent Expert Commission Switzerland - World War II , known as the Bergier Commission . She had been commissioned by the Federal Council to investigate the controversial relationship between Switzerland and National Socialist Germany . On March 22, 2002, the commission presented its results in the Bergier report .

Jean-François Bergier was an expert on the economic history of Switzerland and the Alpine region.
