An everyone's race is a competition in which one can participate without formal admission requirements such as licenses , ranking positions and / or invitations. Participation in such a competition is basically open to anyone without such requirements, provided that they pay the often necessary participation fees in advance.

The public races are to be distinguished from cycle tourism trips , which lack the competitive character.

Emergence

The history of the public races is closely connected to the "limited" competitions: If one assumes that in the past every competition was basically open to every willing participant, then the introduction of participation requirements (licenses and / or invitations) has drawn a border to the public races. The most well-known requirements are, for example, racing licenses (in motorsport , cycling or athletics ), outstanding previous results for participation in invitation races (although the organizer can reserve the right to make a specific selection here) or positions in a ranking list that entitle them to participate in competitions (such as world rankings in tennis ). These restrictions can also coincide, for example in the case of the Tour de France , to which the organizers invite teams that in turn have to provide drivers who have the required license.

Regulations

Personal restrictions: In many public races, in order to maintain the sporting level, care is taken not to admit participants with a qualification for the more demanding "closed" races, e.g. holders of a license . In some cases, age restrictions are set, but these only apply to the participation of minors.

Material restrictions: Regarding the material used, there are regulations that also apply to the "restricted" races, such as the use of certain fuels (in motorsport ) or certain attachments (in cycling ).

character

Everyman's races often have a folk festival-like character, as here, due to the popular sports orientation, neither entrance fees are required from spectators nor top athletic performance is expected. “Being there is everything” is often the motto, which is why in these competitions the personal experience is often more important than the sporting result.

In the meantime, however, amateur races have already taken on the characteristics of a professional race, which is not only reflected in the speed of a race, but above all also demands an enormous amount from the organizer's organizational performance. There are several route lengths to meet the will and ability to perform. Several starting blocks are divided up on each route, with starting times spaced a long way apart. So the drivers in a block all have a similar level of performance. The organizer determines this level from the previous year's figure. This also reduces the risk of accidents.

Big races for everyone

Many of the competitions that are not organized by associations also offer a race for everyone. At most privately organized events, this is held on the same day of the invitation race, with the invited participants starting before or after the mass of the public race. Everyone races take place with different numbers of participants and different backgrounds. The big races for everyone include the New York City Marathon with 50,000 participants (2014), the world's largest cycle race, the Cape Town Cycle Tour (until 2014 Cape Argus Pick'N'Pay Cycletour) in Cape Town , South Africa with around 34,000 participants (2015), the Cyclassics Hamburg (formerly Vattenfall Cyclassics) as Europe's largest cycling event for everyone with 22,000 participants (2008) or original stages of the Tour de France . The German Cycling Cup is the largest German racing series for everyone, with 25,000 bookings, organized by the Association of German Cyclists and the Association of German Cycle Race Organizers.

Legal situation in the event of an accident

Since public races have been held and the classic license races have been overtaken in popularity, there have also been discussions and unclear legal views in the event of accidents in connection with property damage and / or interference with the physical integrity of another driver. In non-license races, one does not move in the area of sport law, but in the area of private law. If there is a charge after such accidents and there is evidence and / or witnesses, it can lead to a lawsuit. For example, the person who caused a fall with several injuries and one fatality was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence of 12 months by the Zurzach district court in 2014 during the general race of the cycling days in Gippingen .
