Jerzy Adam Stępień (born September 7, 1946 in Staszów ) is a Polish lawyer and politician. From 2006 to 2008 he was President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Poland .

Life

In 1969 Stępień graduated from Warsaw University with a law degree . He initially pursued the career of a judge and worked as a judge at the Regional Court in Kielce from 1973 and at the Higher Regional Court from 1975. From 1979 to 1989 he worked as a lawyer.

In 1980 he was one of the founding members of Solidarność in the Heiligkreuz region and took on a board function there. Stępień took part in the round table negotiations . From 1989 to 1993 he was a representative of the Kielce Voivodeship and a member of the Senate of the Republic of Poland for the first and second electoral terms. In 1989 he stood as a candidate for the citizens' committee , and in 1991 as a non-party. In 1993 he joined the Christian Democratic Party .

From 1997 to 1999 he served in Jerzy Buzek's government as Deputy Minister in the Polish Ministry of the Interior. In June 1999 he was elected judge of the Constitutional Court by the Sejm . On November 4, 2006, the Polish President appointed him chairman of this court. He held this position for almost two years, and on June 25, 2008 he resigned from the Constitutional Court. Subsequently, he was head of the Institute for Civil Society and Social Policy ( Instytut Przestrzeni Obywatelskiej i Polityki Społecznej ) at the Warsaw Łazarski University.

Awards

Stępień has received various prestigious awards. These include the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2010), the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas (2008), the Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland (2006), the Gloria Artis Medal for Cultural Merit and that of the Judicial Council ( Krajowa Rada Sądownictwa ) awarded medal for services to justice ( Bene Merentibus Iustitiae ).
