Jessica Ulrika Meir (born July 1, 1977 in Caribou , Maine ) is an American - Swedish astronaut . Your first space flight led to the International Space Station (ISS) on September 25, 2019 with the Soyuz MS-15 mission .

Meir grew up in Caribou , Maine, the youngest of five children of an Iraqi-Israeli doctor and a Swedish nurse.

After graduating from Caribou High School, Meir received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Brown University in Rhode Island in 1999 , and the following year she graduated with a Masters in Space Research from the Alsatian International Space University . From 2000 to 2003 she worked at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and, as part of her work there, took part in the NEEMO 4 mission as an aquanaut in 2002 .

She received her PhD in marine biology from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego in 2009 . Her research focuses on studying the physiology of animals under extreme environmental conditions. She has been an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts General Hospital since 2012 .

Astronaut activity

Meir applied for a place in NASA astronaut group 20 in 2009, but dropped out in the last round of the application process. On June 17, 2013, she was selected as one of eight members of NASA Astronaut Group 21 . In July 2015, she completed the astronaut training.

Your first space flight started on September 25, 2019 with the Soyuz MS-15 mission to the International Space Station (ISS), together with Oleg Skripotschka and Hassa al-Mansuri . As a flight engineer, she was a member of ISS Expedition 61 and ISS Expedition 62 . After a good six months on the ISS, it returned to Earth on April 17, 2020. Meir was the first Swedish woman in space because of her dual citizenship.

On October 18, 2019, Meir completed her first spacecraft mission ; Together with Christina Koch , she exchanged a defective charging / discharging unit for the station's batteries. As it was the first time that an all-female team was on duty, this spacewalk attracted a lot of attention. It lasted seven hours and 17 minutes, including a short live television broadcast about US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence .
