Joachim Wuermeling (born July 19, 1960 in Münster ) is a German former politician ( CSU ) and has been a member of the board of the Deutsche Bundesbank since 2016 . Before taking office, the State Secretary was a. D. and former European politician of the CSU in various leading positions in the finance and insurance industry as well as in politics, most recently as a board member of the Association of Sparda Banks .

He is co-founder of the Europa-Professionell group and currently honorary treasurer of the non-partisan Europa-Union Deutschland .

Life

After graduating from the Tilemannschule in Limburg (1979), Wuermeling studied law. In 1985 he passed his first state examination in law in Bayreuth. He then completed his doctorate with Peter Häberle in Bayreuth (1987). This was followed by the legal clerkship with the Second State Examination (1989). Wuermeling obtained a Master of Comparative, European and International Law at the European University Institute in Florence in 1990 .

After completing his academic training, Wuermeling initially worked from 1989 to 1993 as a European representative at the Bavarian representation in Bonn. He then worked (1993–1995) in the cabinet of Commissioner Schmidhuber in the European Commission in Brussels and (1993–1999) Head of Division in the European Department in the Bavarian State Chancellery in Munich .

Between 1999 and 2005 Wuermeling was a member of the European Parliament in the European People's Party (EPP). He was u. a. Member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and Deputy Coordinator of the EPP in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (2002-2004).

Wuermeling was a deputy member of the EP delegation to the European Convention that drafted the European draft constitution (2002–2003).

From December 2005 to January 2008 was Wuermeling tenured State for European Affairs in the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and in this function coordinator of European policy.

From 2008 to 2011, Wuermeling was a member of the executive board of the General Association of the German Insurance Industry and was responsible for Europe and international affairs.

Between 2011 and 2016 Wuermeling was chairman of the board of the Association of Sparda Banks .

On November 1, 2016, Wuermeling took up his position as a member of the Bundesbank's Board of Management .

Wuermeling works on a voluntary basis as treasurer in the presidium of the non-partisan European Union Germany . From 2009 to 2011 he was also the spokesman for the European Union Capital Group Europa-Professionell with the federal civil servant Silke Kaul . The group formed a network of European experts in Berlin and wants to promote the Europeanization of German federal politics. The citizens' initiative will make use of his long-standing Brussels and Berlin EU insider knowledge.

From 2010 to 2012 he was a member of the European Economic and Social Committee , a subsidiary body of the European Union.

In 2011 Wuermeling was appointed honorary professor at the University of Potsdam . Wuermeling has been a lecturer there and at the University of Bayreuth since 1998 .

Joachim Wuermeling is married and has five daughters. He is one of the sons of George Wuermeling , former district administrator of the district Limburg because castle , and grandson of the first Federal Family Minister Franz-Josef Wuermeling (Cabinet Adenauer II , III , IV ).
