Joanna Kulig (born June 24, 1982 in Krynica-Zdrój ) is a Polish actress and singer.

education

Joanna Kulig grew up with two brothers and two sisters in the spa town of Krynica-Zdrój on the edge of the Beskids. The parents were musicians, they played at local festivals, the children took part. Joanna was accepted into the piano class of a music high school, and she also took dance and singing lessons as a child.

After graduating from high school, she attended the hotel management school in Krynica-Zdrój and, after completing her training, studied at the Stanisław Wyspiański Theater School in Krakow .

Career

As a 16-year-old she won a season of the talent competition “Chance to Success” ( Szansa na sukces ) of the state television channel TVP with a jazz ballad by Grzegorz Turnau . In the final round she took third place. From 2006 onwards she appeared in Polish and later international television and film productions. In the fantasy film Hansel and Gretel: Hexenjäger (2013) by Tommy Wirkola she plays a red-haired witch . In 2013 she was awarded the Polish Film Prize for Best Supporting Actress for the film The Better Life .

In the 2015 with the Oscar -winning black-and-white film Ida by Paweł Pawlikowski she took on the supporting role of a jazz singer. In the controversial film Kler (Klerus) by Wojciech Smarzowski she plays the housekeeper and lover of an alcoholic, corrupt village pastor who tries to force her to have an abortion; she also played nude scenes. In 2018 she received the European Film Award for Best Actress for Cold War - The Latitude of Love by Paweł Pawlikowski.

Private life

Joanna Kulig is married to the director Maciek Bochniak . In February 2009 she gave birth to a son.
