Joseph "Joe" Anthony Mantegna Jr. (born November 13, 1947 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actor , voice actor and director .

Life and accomplishments

Joe Mantegna comes from an Italian-American family. Mantegna made his acting debut in 1969 in the musical Hair . He got his first film role in the short film Medusa Challenger from 1976, which is about two flower sellers on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago - his older partner played Jack Wallace . Alongside Don Ameche , Mantegna played one of the leading roles in the comedy Things Change by David Mamet in 1988 and won the Coppa Volpi at the Venice Film Festival in the same year . He had previously drawn attention to himself as a trickster in the 1987 film House of Mamet's Games . For his leading role in the thriller Homicide (1991), also by David Mamet, he was nominated in 1992 for the London Critics Circle Film Award .

In 1990 he worked in the third part of Francis Ford Coppola's "Godfather" in the role of a New York mafioso. In the thriller Body of Evidence (1993) he appeared alongside Madonna and Willem Dafoe , and in the mini-television series The Last Don based on Mario Puzo , he took on one of the larger roles alongside Danny Aiello , Kirstie Alley and Daryl Hannah . For this role he was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1997. He was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award in 1999 for his role in the drama Frank, Dean and Sammy Do It (1998), in which he starred alongside Ray Liotta . In 2005, he received a Gotham Award nomination for Nine Lives (2005) . In the cartoon series The Simpsons , Mantegna lends his voice to the character Fat Tony .

In the series Criminal Minds Mantegna appears with the 6th episode of the third season as the successor to Jason Gideon ( Mandy Patinkin ), since 2014 also as executive director .

Mantegna directed the drama Lakeboat (2000) based on a script by David Mamet . For this work he received the 2001 Grand Prize of the Savannah Film and Video Festival . In 1999 Mantegna received the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Lifetime Achievement and the 2000 Santa Monica Film Festival Tribute Award .

On April 29, 2011, Mantegna was awarded a star in the theater category on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .

Mantegna has been married to Arlene Vrhel since 1975. They have two children, of whom the daughter Gia Mantegna is also an actress.

His German voice actors are u. a. Frank Glaubrecht , Dennis Brandau and Lutz Mackensy .
