Johann Wilhelm Schütz (born September 15, 1839 in Berlin ; † November 7, 1920 there ) was a German veterinarian . He was a professor at the Royal Veterinary School, which became the Berlin Veterinary College in 1887.

Life

Schütz began studying veterinary medicine at the Royal Veterinary School in Berlin in 1856 as a civilian student and in 1860 passed the state examination as a veterinarian with the rating “very good”. He achieved the same mark in the exams as a district veterinarian (1862) and department veterinarian (1867). From 1862 to 1864 Schütz studied medicine at the University of Berlin , after which he worked as a district veterinarian in Fischhausen b. Königsberg (Prussia) used. In 1866 he took part in the Franco-German War as a horse doctor and studied medicine in Berlin for another two years. In 1870 he was employed as a tutor, in 1871 as a full teacher and in 1876 as professor of pathological anatomy, bacteriology and pathology at the veterinary school (from 1887 veterinary college ) in Berlin. In the periods 1889/92, 1895/98 and 1915/19 he was rector of this institution. In 1868 he acquired the Dr. med. et chir. He became a veterinary assessor at the Medical College for the Province of Brandenburg (1878), member of the Reich Health Council (1876) and technical deputy for the veterinary sector (1875).

In 1882, together with Friedrich Loeffler , he succeeded in breeding Burkholderia mallei , the pathogen that causes snot . Together with Robert Koch , he discovered the swine red rash bacillus and demonstrated the difference between the tuberculosis pathogen in cattle and humans. In 1900, Schütz enforced the successfully completed school leaving examination as a prerequisite for studying veterinary medicine.
