Life

Johannes Hendrikus Donner, 1978

Johannes Hendrikus Donner, whose father Jan Donner was Minister of Justice of the Netherlands from 1926 to 1933 , studied law and psychology for a few semesters before becoming a professional chess player.

He won the Dutch championship in 1954, 1957 and 1958 and was considered the second best player in the country for almost 20 years behind the former world chess champion Max Euwe . He represented his country from 1950 in Dubrovnik to 1978 in Buenos Aires at eleven Chess Olympiads and scored 92 points from 153 games. In 1976 he won a silver medal with the Dutch team, in 1950 (on the second reserve board) and 1952 (on the third board) he received silver in the board scoring. With the Netherlands, he also took part in the finals of the 1965 European Team Championship in Hamburg . In 1952 he became international champion , in 1959 he was awarded the title of grandmaster by FIDE .

His greatest sporting successes were his first place in the Hoogoven tournament in Beverwijk 1963, ahead of the Soviet grandmasters Dawid Bronstein and Juri Awerbach and his victory over Bobby Fischer at the 1962 Chess Olympiad. He achieved further successes in Beverwijk 1950 (first before Euwe and Nicolas Rossolimo ), Amsterdam 1958 (second with Euwe before Bronstein), Amsterdam-IBM 1964 (second behind Bent Larsen ) and Amsterdam-IBM 1965 (first before Bruno Parma ). In 1971 in Berlin he was second behind Svetozar Gligorić at the International German Championship . His best historical rating before the Elo was introduced was 2622 in August 1966.

In the Netherlands, Donner made a name for himself primarily through his journalistic activities for many daily newspapers and journals. He was considered a provocative and controversial writer who was not afraid to open his disputes with chess players or other publicists. He was particularly hostile to Lodewijk Prins for many years. He wrote columns for de Volkskrant and NRC Handelsblad, among others . When he was severely physically impaired after a stroke in 1983, he continued this work until his death.

Donner also found his way into fiction : He provided his close friend, the Dutch author Harry Mulisch , with the model for the character of Onno Quist in the novel De ontdekking van de hemel (1992) ( The discovery of heaven ) (1993 ), which was filmed in a British-Dutch production in 2001.
