Johannes Menke

Johannes Menke (* 1972 in Nuremberg ) is a music theorist , university professor and composer .

Johannes Menke studied oboe, school music and German studies in Freiburg im Breisgau, then music theory with Eckehard Kiem and composition with Mathias Spahlinger and received his doctorate in 2004 with a thesis on Giacinto Scelsi at the Technical University of Berlin , supervised by Janina Klassen .

From 1999 to 2009 he taught music theory at the Freiburg University of Music . Since 2007 he has been professor of historical typesetting at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . From 2008 to 2012 he was President of the Society for Music Theory (GMTH).

Menke is editor of the sinefonia series (Wolke Verlag), the practice and theory series of partimentospiels (Florian Noetzel Verlag) and the magazine Musik & Ästhetik . He has presented numerous publications on the analysis as well as the history and didactics of music theory , including two textbooks on counterpoint of the Renaissance and the Baroque published by Laaber-Verlag. So far he has composed mainly vocal and chamber music.
