John Chayka

John Chayka (born June 9, 1989 in St. Catharines , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and now - a functional . From May 2016 to July 2020, he served as the general manager of the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League . At the age of 26, he was the youngest general manager in NHL history when he was appointed.

Career

Chayka only played ice hockey during his junior years and was active for the Cowichan Valley Capitals in the British Columbia Hockey League before he had to end his active career in 2010 due to a back injury. In the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League , the right winger was selected in the 15th round in 2005 in 289th place by the Plymouth Whalers .

In 2009, Chayka founded Stathletes, Inc. with a business partner Neil Lane and acted as their Director of Hockey Operations . The company deals with the evaluation of ice hockey games on the basis of an in-depth video analysis, which can be used to derive objective impressions and tendencies for player and team performance. In 2014, Chayka received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario .

Before the start of the 2015/16 season , Chayka was hired as an assistant to the then General Manager Don Maloney . After his release, Chayka took over the post in May 2016. In July 2020, he surprisingly resigned from his position as the Coyotes prepared for the 2020 playoffs . His successor was initially Steve Sullivan .
