Cornerstone Church

John Hagee (born April 12, 1940 in Baytown , Texas ) is an American preacher and televangelist and founder and leader of the Cornerstone Church in Texas with more than 19,000 members. He spreads conspiracy theories alongside controversial views on National Socialism and homosexuality . He is one of the most financially successful and politically influential preachers within American Protestantism .

Political opinions

John Hagee founded the lobby organization Christians United for Israel (CUfI) in 2006 . The latter supports the Israeli government unconditionally and advocates a militaristic foreign policy. Hagee is convinced that the Middle East conflict is the clearest sign that the end of the world is imminent. In the 2008 election campaign for the presidency, Hagee was one of the most important church leaders who supported John McCain . On May 22, 2008, McCain declared his collaboration with Hagee ended because he had described the Holocaust as "God's will".

CUFI claims to represent the interests of 15 million evangelical Christians in the United States. Approx. 500 people are members of the lobby organization. Among them are influential preachers, writers, owners of Christian television stations and numerous politicians from the Republican Party . Hagee's book, Jerusalem Countdown, has sold more than 600,000 copies.

Hagee advocates the death penalty . He defends them on his website. The biblical commandment "You shall not kill!" ( Ex 20,13  LUT ) does not contradict his political views. In the Old Testament, God repeatedly called for the death penalty for various offenses. In addition, one must translate the commandment with “You shall not murder!” (According to the standard translation , cf. Ex 20.13  EU ). The death penalty should be understood as killing and not murder , since it is not imposed out of self-interest but in accordance with the law of the state.

Hagee is considered one of the most outspoken opponents of Islam within the neoconservative movement. In a radio interview in 2006 he stated:

“People who orient their lives according to the Koran have the mandate of their scriptures to kill Christians and Jews. [...] There are 1.3 billion people who follow Islam. Assuming that only 15 percent of them come to America or Israel to destroy it, we are still talking about 200 million people. That is far more than Hitler , Italy, Japan and the other Axis powers had under arms in World War II . "

Hagee is convinced that the Bible prophesies the near end of the world. In his view, the Islamic states, the European Union (which in his eyes is an instrument of the Antichrist ), Russia and China will attack Israel. This war will give birth to the Last Judgment . From the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and the increased Muslim terrorism since September 11, 2001, the Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon wars and the electoral successes of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hamas in the past decade, Hagee concludes that the final battle will take place in a few years.

In an interview on CNN in the fall of 2007, he said:

“The main reason we should worry about Israel is because it is a democratic society and the United States has always defended democratic societies. We defended England, we defended France against Hitler. We're reliving the story. We are back in 1938. Iran is Germany and Ahmadinejad is Hitler. "

The Hurricane Katrina , large parts of the city New Orleans destroyed, interpreted Hagee as God's punishment for America. On the one hand, gay parades had taken place in the city , on the other hand, George W. Bush had advised the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to give up Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip . According to Hagee, according to the principle of "an eye for an eye ", God allegedly exercised vengeance on the land of the Americans because his Holy Land had been touched. Hagee advocates a preventive nuclear war against Iran. In 2012, Hagee urged atheists to leave the US, claiming the US was a Christian nation.

Political supporters

Hagee can count on a large number of political supporters. In 30 years he has traveled to Israel 22 times and met with all prime ministers since Menachem Begin . The annual meeting of his organization CUfI 2007 was attended by the Israeli ambassador to the USA Danny Ayalon . George W. Bush was criticized by Hagee for exhorting the Israeli government to compromise on the people of the Gaza Strip. Still, Bush was keen to maintain good relations with the CUfI and sent a message of greeting to the 2006 and 2007 annual meetings.

During the presidential campaign, Hagee met with Governor Mike Huckabee and Senator John McCain, both of whom were running for the presidency. Other senators such as the Jew Joe Lieberman , the Catholic Rick Santorum or the Presbyterian James Inhofe also support Hagee's Israel policy. Supporters of the CUfI also include former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Republican Group leader Roy Blunt and Tom DeLay .

Holocaust willed by God

In his book Jerusalem Countdown , John Hagee takes the view that the Holocaust was willed by God. The passages in question read:

“It was the disobedience and rebellion of the Jews, God's chosen people, against their promise in the Holy Covenant [with God] to serve only one true God, Jehovah , that led to the enmity and persecution that they were in the land Canaan and continues to this day. [...] How terribly repulsive, insulting and heartbreaking to God that the Jews whom He showered with blessings worshiped idols. Their own rebellion planted the seeds for the anti-Semitism that arose and brought annihilation to them for centuries to come. […] It arose from God's judgment against his rebellious chosen people. "

“The Bible is a book of parables and figurative language that describes God's principles of truth to man. The prophet Jeremiah took up pen and parchment and drew a living picture for mankind of God's plans to bring the Jews back to Israel: 'Behold, I will send out many fishermen, says the Lord, they shall fish them; and after that I will send out many hunters to catch them on every mountain and on every hill and in every crack in the stone. ' (Jer 16,16 LUT ) "

“I think this verse indicates that the negative is preceded by the positive. Judgment follows thanks and grace. The fishermen come before the hunters. First God sent the fishermen to Israel. These were the Zionists , men like Theodor Herzl , who called on the Jews of Europe and around the world to go to Palestine and found a Jewish state. The Jews were exhorted to flee when it was not too late. The situation of the Jews in Europe did not get better, it just got worse. "

“A fisherman is the one who lures his prey to him. Herzl and his Zionist companions were God's fishermen who called the sons and daughters of Abraham home. Herzl was deeply saddened that the Jews of the world did not follow his wishes in large numbers. "

“Then God sent the hunters. The hunter is the one who pursues his target with violence and terror. Nobody could foresee the horrors of the Holocaust, but the violence and horrors of Hitler and the Nazis brought the Jewish people back to the only homeland God intended for the Jews - Israel. I am amazed at the precision of God's words and their significance for the present. I am awestruck and admire his boundless love for Israel and the Jewish people and His divine determination that the promise he made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would come true. "

In the liberal media and among representatives of liberal Judaism, these passages were viewed as anti-Semitic. Representatives of conservative Judaism partially agree with Hagee's views, as they see the Holocaust in line with Babylonian captivity or slavery in Egypt.

The American Jewish journalist Max Blumenthal attended CUfI's annual meeting in 2007. At a press conference, he asked Hagee about the passages in his book in which he had declared that the Holocaust was willed by God. Blumenthal was then "escorted out" of the convention center by security personnel.

In a sermon on March 16, 2003 called Hagee the coming Antichrist as "gay," partially Jewish, "as Hitler and Karl Marx " and "from Germany Coming", in a sermon on 23 March 2003 Hagee made subsequent to classical conspiracy an "invisible government" which u. a. the Federal Reserve System , which includes the Rothschilds and the Illuminati , is responsible for America's economic problems.

In a newspaper interview, Hagee stated that there are “liberal Jews” who support homosexuality and abortion and who, because of their “poisoned view”, do not value his commitment to Israel.

In the 1990s, Hagee justified the murder of Yitzchak Rabin as willed by God, since Rabin had entered into peace negotiations with the Palestinians.
