Life

John Kander began his Broadway career in the 1950s as a choir leader and conductor in musical theaters on Broadway . The work as an arranger for the dance scenes in the musicals Gypsy and Irma la Douce at the end of the 1950s finally led him to composing his own musicals. His first musical A Family Affair from 1962 was a flop.

In the same year Kander met his future partner, the songwriter Fred Ebb . They landed their first hit with My coloring book , which was added to her repertoire by Barbra Streisand , among others . Their first musical project, Golden Gate , was not performed, but brought Broadway producer Harold Prince to entrust them with the work on the musical Flora, the Red Menace . It was the first success for both the Kander / Ebb duo and the young Liza Minnelli , who received a Tony Award .

The most successful composition by John Kander then became the musical Cabaret . The premiere on Broadway took place on November 20, 1966, directed by Harold Prince, the leading roles played Lotte Lenya as Miss Schneider , Jill Haworth played Sally Bowles and Joel Gray as master of ceremonies was the only one who later also directed under Bob Fosse as a director participated in the film version from 1972. The last of 1165 performances took place on September 6, 1969. The musical won a total of eight Tony Awards.

After the filming of Cabaret , the collaboration with Liza Minnelli, who played Sally Bowles in the film, intensified , and Kander wrote numerous songs for her. Kanders and Ebbs' best-known composition was the song New York, New York from 1977, written for the Martin Scorsese film of the same name. Liza Minnelli sang the song in the film and Frank Sinatra made it a world hit and the unofficial anthem of New York. There are also some versions in German; Harald Juhnke sang it under the title Berlin, Berlin .

Over the decades, Kander and Ebb created numerous other world successes such as the musicals Chicago and the Spider Woman's Kiss . In 2010, Kander married his long-time partner, the choreographer and dancer Albert Stephenson in Toronto.

He is the great-uncle of former Secretary of State for the US state of Missouri , Jason Kander .
